Mother’s Day is this Sunday!
The South Florida Museum has two great ways to express your gratitude to the moms in your life. The Museum will be open on Sunday, May 10th from Noon – 5 pm – perfect timing to bring mom by after brunch!
The Museum Store also offers a great selection of items to make Mother’s Day extra special. We have wonderful wildlife and history books, manatee and wildlife art, and a beautiful selection of handmade and unique jewelry. There’s something to make every mother smile!

It’s National Tourism Week!
|
National Travel and Tourism Week is May 2-10, 2015. It’s an annual tradition that was established by a congressional resolution in 1983 and first celebrated the following year. This nationwide week of events serves to champion the power of the tourism industry. We would like to thank all of our readers and visitors who have voted the Museum one of Bradenton’s favorite attractions and helped us to earn the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for the last several years.
The South Florida Museum works closely with our local and statewide tourism organizations to help promote Bradenton, the region and Florida as an engaging and exciting destination for travelers. As one of the most popular and well-rated attractions in the area, the Museum serves as a an anchor institution for downtown Bradenton’s cultural arts scene. We are proud to work with our industry partners to continue to grow the tourism market and expand our local economic impact.
We would especially like to thank the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (BACVB), our local destination marketing organization for their continued support, promotion, and tireless work. The BACVB staff does tremendous work on behalf of the tourism industry in Bradenton and this is a great time to thank them for the community and economic impact that their work has. Thanks also to Visit Sarasota, Visit Florida, and to our members, visitors and locals who continue to promote the Museum to their family and friends. |

A magical adventure story centering on Pi Patel, the precocious son of a zookeeper. After a shipwreck, Pi is adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a 26-foot lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, all fighting for survival.

Snooty’s 67th Birthday Card Contest is Now Open for Submissions!

Snooty’s Annual Birthday Card Contest is officially open for entries! Students entering preschool-6th grade are encouraged to submit a birthday card for Snooty for the chance to win great prizes. Birthday cards will be judged for creativity and originality… so have fun!
All submissions must be received by Saturday, July 3, 2015 at 5 pm. Late submissions and submissions without a completed entry form will not be judged. First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in to the top cards in each of four age categories immediately following the crowd serenading Snooty with “The Birthday Song” at noon during Snooty’s 67th Birthday Bash on Saturday, July 18, 2015. Awards will be announced and prizes distributed in the Museum’s Spanish Plaza. To be judged, all entries must include an entry form with name, home address, telephone number, age and child’s school grade (2015- 2016). Entry forms can be picked up at the Museum (201 10th Street W, Bradenton, FL 34205) or download below.

“The Aging Brain v. Alzheimer’s Disease ” with Dr. Alan B. Grindal, MD, FAAN
Although “normal” aging and Alzheimer’s disease are often seen as separate independent categories of cognitive decline, it may be more accurate to view them as a continuum of change. This discussion will focus on subtle diagnostic differences, methods of detection and the means of intervention we have at the present and what will be hopefully available in the future.

Also don’t miss the special exhibition currently showing at the South Florida Museum, Alzheimer’s Awareness: Teens Share Through Visual Art Perspectives on exhibit in the Museum’s second floor Rincon Gallery through May 29. Kathy Fitzgerald worked with her high school and 7th grade art classes at Bradenton Christian School to create artwork that helps to shed light on Alzheimer’s Disease – the debilitating brain ailment that causes so much pain to its victims and their families. (The exhibition is included in regular Museum admission.)
