County promotes Solid Waste Manager to head of division

SARASOTA COUNTY – Sarasota County’s Solid Waste Division will have a new leader, as Larry Alexander has been promoted to serve as the division’s manager.

Larry Alexander

Alexander has nearly 28 years of experience in waste management services and has been serving Sarasota County since 2004 as solid waste manager.

The Syracuse, N.Y., native has lived in Florida since 1995, and has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors. Since working for Sarasota County, Alexander has been responsible for overseeing a $24 million operating budget, managing all solid waste collections programs, and serving 153,000 residential and commercial customers.

Alexander is excited about taking the next step in not only his career, but in helping to provide the best possible service to Sarasota County residents. Scheduled to start in his new role on Feb. 23, Alexander feels his experience in the public and private waste management sectors have prepared him for this exciting new opportunity.

“This is the pinnacle of my career,” Alexander said. “I understand the importance of customers and the need to provide a high level of service. I want to make sure they’re getting the service they’re paying for.”

Alexander replaces outgoing Solid Waste Director Gary Bennett, who is retiring after working 27 years for Sarasota County.

County Administrator Tom Harmer praised the work of Bennett, and looked forward to Alexander continuing the same level of excellence and leadership.

“Gary will leave some large shoes to fill, but I’m confidant that Larry Alexander will rise to the challenge and ensure a continued spirit of excellence for the solid waste division,” Harmer said, adding, “Larry is the perfect choice to further our culture of being responsive, offering solutions, and thinking as one team.”

Before his time with Sarasota County, Alexander worked for public and private entities throughout the Tampa Bay area. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Transportation and Distribution Management from Syracuse University in 1986.

Alexander’s interests include classic cars, golf, his daughter’s softball team and providing the highest level of customer service.
