Hosts Techapella 2017

A Cappella Showcase Comes to SFCM November 29
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – For the second year in a row, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) will host the musical show, Techapella, on Wednesday, November 29. The annual showcase brings together a cappella groups comprised of tech employees to showcase the best vocal ensembles in the industry. This will be the first time Techapella is presented at the SFCM campus. (In December 2016, SFCM hosted Techapella at the Curran Theater in San Francisco.) Renowned a cappella personality and Sing-Off producer Deke Sharon will serve as emcee for this year’s Techapella.
The participating a cappella groups consist of employees from the tech industry’s most visible companies: Googapella (Google), The Vocal Network (Facebook), Songbirds (Twitter), The Square Registers (Square), The Pintunes (Pinterest), The Keynotes (Apple), and Internote (an inter-company a cappella group).
Techapella, now in its fifth year, is one of the tech industry’s most eagerly awaited, inter-company events. The informal, non-competitive concert setting allows for participants to expand the reach of their artistic expression in a friendly, welcoming environment while exhibiting their collective talent in a vocal spectacle that has continually drawn sold-out crowds. In past years, vocal groups have performed a dynamic spread of tunes ranging from the latest hits to pop classics and other favorites.
“We are very pleased to host Techapella at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music,” says SFCM President David H. Stull. “Music is central to life and this project is a testament to the joy and spirit that we all derive from coming together for a live performance. We look forward to continuing our support for Techapella in the future.”
Techapella founders Aaron Roan (Googapella) and Laolee Xiong (The Vocal Network) are inspired by Techapella’s growth. “Each Techapella offers us the chance to promote the creative arts and industry collaboration in Silicon Valley, and gives us the opportunity to flex our artistic muscles in the most affable of environments and with the friendliest of peers,” say Roan and Xiong. “The influences and platforms our companies have are far reaching and we want to do our part in bringing the tech industry and the arts community together.”
Interest in the show has grown, too, with more groups participating this year than ever before. “We may have to get creative with our performance next year, but we’re thrilled that there is so much interest from groups around the Bay Area,” says Lindsay Alford, Techapella’s coordinator.
In addition to the November 29 event at SFCM, a Techapella South Bay concert will take place at Fox Theatre in Redwood City, CA on Monday, December 4.

About the San Francisco Conservatory of Music
Founded in 1917, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music is the oldest conservatory in the American West and has earned an international reputation for producing musicians of the highest caliber. Its faculty includes nearly 30 members of the San Francisco Symphony as well as Grammy and Latin Grammy Award-winning artists in the fields of orchestral and chamber performance and classical guitar. The Conservatory offers its 400-plus collegiate students fully accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in composition and instrumental and vocal performance. SFCM was the first institution of its kind to offer world-class graduate degree programs in chamber music and classical guitar. Its Pre-College Division provides exceptionally high standards of musical excellence and personal attention to more than 200 younger students. SFCM faculty and students give nearly 500 public performances each year, most of which are offered to the public at no charge. Its community outreach programs serve over 1,600 school children and over 6,000 members of the wider community. Notable alumni include violinists Yehudi Menuhin and Isaac Stern, conductor and pianist Jeffrey Kahane, soprano Elza van den Heever, Blue Bottle Coffee founder James Freeman and Ronald Losby, President, Steinway & Sons – Americas, among others. The Conservatory’s Civic Center facility is an architectural and acoustical masterwork, and the Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall was lauded by The New York Times as the “most enticing classical-music setting” in the San Francisco Bay Area. For more information, visit www.sfcm.edu.
