Snooty's 67th Birthday BashBy: Carol Erickson

Celebrating the Worlds Oldest Manatee on record,  is once again being held this Saturday,  July 18th at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton.  Snooty is now officially recognized  as “The Oldest Manatee in Captivity ” by The Guinness Book of World Records.

Every year for the past few decades, The South Florida Museum puts on a Big Birthday Bash for Snooty ,  not only to celebrate this famous aquatic mammal,  but to bring awareness to the facility and launch their new fundraising  campaign.   The museum’s rehabilitation facility is a temporary nurturing home for the manatees before they are released back into the wild. Snooty along with the other resident manatees will eat more than 80,000 lbs of lettuce and veggies a year at a cost of over $80,000 and additional life support costs totalling  another $50,000.  Since they are a non-profit organization and have very little state or federal funding,  they rely on their much appreciated volunteers and donations from so many caring and dedicated contributors.

Snooty’s wildly popular outdoor birthday party is free and open to the public from 10 am to 2 pm.  It includes  numerous attractions,  activities  and entertainment in the Museum’s Spanish Courtyard  Plaza.  For those that would like to continue the adventure, the Museum,  Planetarium and Aquarium  are open for discounted admission all day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY  SNOOTY… may you continue to bring more years of enjoyment and beautiful memories to your many fans from all over the world.

SNOOTY’S SUMMER SALAD CHALLENGE – Monday, July 13th: 10am – noon.

(Location: South Florida Museum Planetarium) Guinness World Records has named Snooty™ the “Oldest Manatee in Captivity.” The official announcement verified the well-recognized belief that Snooty has been the oldest known manatee in the world for many years. Now, five local restaurant concepts will help celebrate the 67th birthday of the manatee, a permanent resident of the South Florida Museum’s Parker Manatee Aquarium in downtown Bradenton, by competing in a salad contest inspired by Snooty’s menu of vegetables and fruits.

“Last July, we were thoroughly impressed with the individuals who competed in our first-ever romaine lettuce-eating contest. However, we wanted to add more of Snooty’s ‘super foods’ to the mix this year as we bring in the true culinary professionals for a special competition: Snooty’s Summer Salad Challenge,” said Marilyn Margold, the Museum’s Director of Living Collections.

‘Snooty’s Summer Salad Challenge’ participants will be awarded prizes for creativity, nutrition and style during the tasting competition held in advance of Snooty’s community-wide birthday celebration. ‘Snooty’s Summer Salad Challenge’ and the public birthday festival event are designed to raise awareness as Snooty™ continues to help educate and inspire the public about marine conservation and endangered species such as manatees.

“In addition to his base diet romaine lettuce, Snooty also eats kale, carrots, celery, broccoli, cabbage, sweet potatoes, beets, an apple a day – and on special occasions like his birthday, pineapple and strawberries. I’m personally looking forward to tasting each chef’s interpretation of Snooty’s menu items; although this time we’ll be leaving all the tasting to the humans. Of course salad dressings are NOT part of Snooty’s specially-designed diet, but we’re making an exception for the Salad Challenge participants!” said Margold. “We can’t thank our restaurant partners enough for helping us raise awareness about our continual resource needs—as they understand, fresh produce is expensive—required to care for Snooty and additional manatees being cared for by the Museum’s veterinary and animal care team.” (Details below.)
