Review of Florida Studio Theatre presentation of  “Clearly Invisible: Magic Up Close with Carl Seiger”

July 24, 2014

ABRACADABRA….that is the magic word used to help magicians “make something happen”  and that is exactly what Carl Seiger did over & over with his cabaret style magic show at the Florida Studio Theatre.  He is a skilled entertainer who combines illusion, music and humor to his show and keeps the audience mesmerized with his witty personality.

Be prepared to be dazzled by his classic card tricks, storytelling and mentalism, but what ‘clearly’ separates Carl from so many other talented magicians, is his charming personality.  There is an immediate chemistry between the performer and his audience as you are anxiously waiting for his next move.
Seiger will be performing only through August 3rd in Sarasota at the Florida Theatre Court Cabaret, 1247 First Street.  For ticket information,  call 941 366-9000 and see what Carl has up his sleeve this time.

(Sarasota, FL) — Magic and mystery come alive in FST’s second show of the Summer Sidekicks Series,Clearly Invisible: Magic Up Close with Carl Seiger. Playing in the Court Cabaret July 8 through August 3,Seiger presents a show filled with sleight-of-hand magic, catchy jazz tunes, and heartwarming storytelling. Single tickets range from $32-$36. Tickets may be purchased online at FloridaStudioTheatre.org, by phone at (941) 366-9000, or by visiting the Box Office.Clearly Invisible dazzles audiences by performing mind-bending illusions with common objects without all the smoke and mirrors. Including music and humor, it stretches the boundaries of conventional theatre, to challenge even the most skeptical of minds.

Seiger speaks to his style of magic stating, “I have always preferred magic performed with everyday objects. Audiences are familiar with a deck of cards, a wine glass, a few silver coins – objects from life. I believe using such items makes the magic more believable, less suspect. I have great regard for large illusion shows, as they can be quite spectacular, but I prefer simplicity. It fits me as a performer. It fits my personality.”

When asked about the decision to bring Seiger in for the Summer Sidekicks Series, FST Artistic Director, Richard Hopkins stated, “It’s great to have Carl back on the FST cabaret stage after so many years. He originally appeared in our Cabaret Fringe Festival back in 1998, and it is only fitting that he should be one of three to premiere our first Summer Sidekicks Series. This is a series designed to share our cabaret stage with our artistic friends (ergo “sidekicks”) by offering them a month long residency. Carl’s special brand of up-close magic and intelligent theatricality is perfect for the intimate Court Cabaret.”

Seiger is a native of the Berkshires of Massachusetts. He lives in the small town of Tyringham with his wife and business partner, Maura Seiger.

About Florida Studio Theatre

Known as Sarasota’s Contemporary Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre was founded in 1973 by Jon Spelman. Starting out as a small touring company, FST traveled to places such as migrant camps and prisons. The company eventually settled down into a permanent home, acquiring the former Woman’s Club building – now renamed the Keating Theatre. In the years that followed, Florida Studio Theatre established itself as a major force in American Theatre, presenting contemporary theatre in its five theatre venues: the Keating Theatre, the renovated Gompertz Theatre, the Goldstein Cabaret, the John C. Court Cabaret, and the Bowne’s Lab Theatre.

Even with its growth, Florida Studio Theatre remains firmly committed to making the arts accessible and affordable to a broad-based audience. Under Richard Hopkins, Artistic Director and CEO, FST develops theatre that speaks to our living, evolving, and dynamically changing world. As FST grows and expands, it continues to provide audiences with challenging, contemporary drama and innovative programs.
