RANGERS REINSTATE RHP YU DARVISH FROM 15-DAY DISABLED LIST;

3B/OF JOEY GALLO OPTIONED TO ROUND ROCK

Darvish is scheduled to start for Texas in tonight’s game against Pittsburgh Pirates

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has reinstated right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish from the 15-day disabled list.  To make room on the active roster for Darvish, the team has optioned third baseman/outfielder Joey Gallo to Triple-A Round Rock.

Darvish, 29, is scheduled to start for the Rangers on Saturday against Pittsburgh in his first major league appearance since August 9, 2014 at Houston.  He opened the 2016 season on the disabled list as he continued to work his way back from ligament reconstruction surgery on his right elbow on March 17, 2015.  Darvish made 5 starts on injury rehabilitation  assignment with Frisco (AA) and Round Rock (AAA) this month, going a combined 1-1 with a 0.90 ERA (2 ER/20.0 IP), holding opponents to a .132 (9-68) batting average with just 2 extra-base hits.

Darvish has a career record of 39-25 with a 3.27 ERA over 83 games/starts in the majors, all with Texas from 2012-14.  He last pitched for the Rangers in a spring training game on March 5, 2015.  In his 3 season debut appearances with the Rangers, Darvish has a 3-0 record with a 2.11 ERA (5 ER/21.1 IP).

Gallo had been recalled on Monday for his first stint with Texas this season, going 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter on Monday vs. Los Angeles-AL in his only appearance.  He has spent the year with Round Rock, batting .265/.415/.639/1.054 (22-83) with 8 home runs and 20 RBI in 24 games.

The Rangers’ major league roster remains at the 40-man limit.
