RANGERS RECALL RHP TANNER SCHEPPERS AND PURCHASE CONTRACT OF RHP ROSS OHLENDORF FROM ROUND ROCK

RHP Kyuji Fujikawa designated for assignment; LHP Ross Detwiler placed on disabled list

Arlington, Texas – The Texas Rangers announced the following roster moves prior to today’s series finale with Cleveland:

  • RHP Tanner Scheppers recalled from Round Rock (AAA)
  • RHP Ross Ohlendorf (#25) contract purchased from Round Rock (AAA)
  • LHP Ross Detwiler placed on 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 15, with left shoulder inflammation
  • RHP Kyuji Fujikawa designated for assignment

Scheppers will be in his second stint with Texas this season, as he posted no record with an 11.25 ERA (5 ER/4.0 IP) in 5 relief outings from April 17-26 before he was optioned to Round Rock on April 27.  He had opened the season on the 15-day disabled list with a right ankle sprain before he was activated on April 17. He has posted 7.2 scoreless innings spanning 7 relief appearances for the Express, holding opponents to a .130 (3-23) average with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.  He last pitched on Friday vs. Omaha (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 SO, 26 pitches/19 strikes).  His last outing with Texas was April 25 at Los Angeles-AL.

Ohlendorf, 32, will be looking to make his Texas debut and first major league appearance since a start with Washington on September 18, 2013 vs. Atlanta.  He has spent the year with Round Rock near his native Austin, going 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA (5 ER/10.1 IP) over 9 relief appearances.  Triple-A opponents have batted .286 (12-42) with 5 walks and 11 strikeouts.  He earned the win in his most recent outing on Thursday vs. Omaha, the second game of a doubleheader (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 16 pitches/9 strikes).  He began the year on the Round Rock disabled list from April 9-21 with a right groin strain, an injury that also slowed him during spring training.  Ohlendorf was 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA (4 ER/9.2 IP) in 4 games/3 starts for Texas this spring, posting 9 strikeouts against one walk.

Ohlendorf missed most of last season with a back injury after pitching in the majors every year from 2007-13, as he has a career 22-33 record and 4.88 ERA over 124 games/80 starts with New York-AL (2007-08), Pittsburgh (2008-11), San Diego (2012), and Washington (2013).  He grew up on a family cattle ranch outside of Austin and graduated from Princeton University.

Detwiler reported shoulder soreness after his most recent start on Thursday vs. Kansas City.  He is 0-5 with a 6.95 ERA (26 ER/33.2 IP) over 7 starts with Texas this season.  The first date he would be eligible to return is May 30.

Fujikawa allowed 3 runs in 1.2 innings over 2 relief outings for the Rangers since he was activated off the disabled list on Thursday.  The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Fujikawa to the minor leagues.

With today’s moves, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.
