RANGERS RECALL RHP NICK MARTÍNEZ FROM TRIPLE-A ROUND ROCK,

OPTION RHP NICK GARDEWINE TO DOUBLE-A FRISCO

Martínez is the scheduled starter for tonight’s series opener in Oakland

Oakland, Calif. — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Martínez from Triple-A Round Rock.  To make room on the active roster for Martínez, the team has also optioned right-handed pitcher Nick Gardewine to Double-A Frisco.

Martínez, 27, is scheduled to start for the Rangers in tonight’s series opener at Oakland.  He has gone 3-4 with a 5.38 ERA in 16 games/13 starts for Texas this season spanning three different stints with the club: April 12-14, April 21-July 5, and July 31-August 9.  He was scheduled to start for Round Rock last night, but was scratched ahead of tonight’s outing with Texas.  Martínez, who last pitched for Texas in a start on August 6 at Minnesota, was a member of the club’s rotation from late April through late June.  He owns a career 4-2 record with a 2.57 ERA (16 ER/56.0 IP) in 12 games/8 starts against the A’s.

Martínez has gone 4-0 with a 2.15 ERA (9 ER/37.2 IP) in 7 games/6 starts for Round Rock this season, including 14.0 shutout innings over 2 starts during his most recent Triple-A stint.  He earned the win for the Express last Friday at New Orleans, posting 7.0 scoreless frames with 8 strikeouts.

Gardewine had his contract purchased from Double-A Frisco on Monday, and allowed 3 unearned runs in 0.2 innings in his major league debut on Tuesday at Los Angeles-AL.  It marked his only appearance during the brief stint with Texas.  He has spent the balance of the season at Frisco.

The Rangers’ major league roster remains at the 40-man limit, along with four players on the 60-day disabled list.

DIEKMAN TO ROUND ROCK: Left-handed pitcher Jake Diekman has been assigned from Frisco (AA) to Round Rock (AAA), where he is scheduled to continue his injury rehabilitation assignment for the Express in tonight’s game at Nashville.  Each of his first 3 rehab outings came with Frisco, pitching 3.0 scoreless innings while holding Texas League opponents to 0-for-9 with 4 strikeouts.
