THE PLAYERS THEATRE ACQUIRES RIGHTS TO NEW SHOW

CHANGES ITS 85th SEASON LINEUP

Sarasota, February 24th, 2014 – The Players Theatre is proud to announce the acquisition of the theatrical rights for The Addams Family, which will now be a part of their 85th Season Broadway Season lineup. The theatre’s original slate of Broadway shows for the 2014-15 year has been shifted around and amended to include this show, resulting in the elimination of Promises, Promises from this year’s lineup. Look for Promises, Promises in The Players’ 86th Season. “We were really excited when we found out that we had secured the rights for The Addams Family—something we weren’t certain would come to pass,” says Jeffery Kin, Artistic Director. “We love to get new titles onto our stage because it automatically adds intrigue for our audiences. It also gives fresh, creative opportunities to our local actors and design teams, which then helps us build our audiences. We all win!”

The 2014-2015 Broadway series opens September 11, 2014 with Lend Me A Tenor. Back by popular demand, enjoy this straight play’s full revival with The Players’ original cast of this hysterical farce. What happens when the curtain is about to rise and the lead tenor is missing?! Local reviewers called it, “The Players’ best comedy EVER.” This show runs until September 21st.

October 30-November 9, 2014, you’ll enjoy the musical adaptation of The Addams Family. This macabre cartoon family has been loved and imitated for generations.  The Addams Family features an original story and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with a man her parents have never met. Gomez and Morticia’s “normal” lives change on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

Up next is Ralphie on his quest for a Red Ryder BB gun in A Christmas Story, The Musical, which runs from December 4-14, 2014. The cult classic movie, set in a small Indiana town in the 1940s, becomes a full-scale Broadway musical! This spry and nostalgic musical is certain to be the perfect anecdote for the holiday blues, with laughs and leg lamps galore!

Start off the New Year with enjoying the classic and moving Kander and Ebb musical, Cabaret. Set in the midst of the Nazi takeover on 1931 Berlin, this glitzy, moving, and surreal musical revolves around cabaret performer Sally Bowles as she battles her onstage stardom and her offstage loves. Songs include: “Cabaret,” “Maybe This Time,” and “Money.”  This show runs from January 8-18, 2015.

Running February 12-22, 2015, is the award-winning musical Violet. Based on the short story The Ugliest Pilgrim, Violet tells the story of a young woman’s quest for beauty amidst the image-obsessed landscape of the 1960s. Facially disfigured in a childhood accident, Violet dreams of a miraculous transformation through the power of faith. Convinced that a televangelist in Oklahoma can heal her, she hops a Greyhound bus and starts the journey of a lifetime. Along the way, Violet forms unlikely friendships with her fellow riders, who teach her about beauty, love, courage and what it means to be an outsider. Violet was the winner of the Drama Critics Circle Award, the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, and is soon to be revived on Broadway!

From March 19-29, 2015 you can try to catch Frank Abignale, Jr in the area premiere of the Broadway Hit Catch Me If You Can. This Tony Award winning musical is based on the popular film of the same title and glamorizes the exciting life of this career con man. Critics called it, “A sheer delight!”

Taking the stage April 23rd through May 3rd and rounding out our season is Love! Valour! Compassion! Set in a lakeside vacation house just north of NYC, 8 gay friends spend three major holidays together one summer. This comical and heart-warming play by Terrence McNally touches on infidelity, truth-telling, skinny-dipping and what turns friends into family.
