HERMITAGE ARTIST INVITATION TO BE A PART OF THE ART

On Thursday, March 16 at 2:30 PM, Photographer and Hermitage Artist-in-Residence, Amanda Marchand, invites the public to be a part of her art in the Lumen Print Photo Project. It all takes place on the beach in front of the Hermitage historic campus, 6660 Manasota Beach Road, Englewood. The project entails creating 1 large-scale sun print (photogram) on photo-sensitive paper with the human form. Marchand completed the first of these Lumen Prints in San Francisco in February. The second print will be made at the Hermitage.

Join us for a collaborative community photo project on the beach,” remarked Patricia Caswell, Hermitage co-founder and program director. “You can come be a part of it, as a participant or an observer. Either way, the lovely part is getting your own print in the mail, and the surprise of seeing how it turned out.”

The collaboration between artist and participants involves a group gathered in a circle and quietly sitting for approximately 30 minutes on photo paper. People can come in and out of the circle and exchange places for those unable to sit for the entire time. The paper measures about 10 ft. X 10 ft. Volunteers are needed throughout the process, starting with rolling out the paper, helping with the fabric covering and possibly turning the print at half time. After the print is made Amanda will make it light tight, then she will join us for an open studio. The entire program will end at 5:00 pm.

People who may not wish to participate with the setup or as a sitter, are still welcome to participate silently as an observer. Everyone will be considered a part of the collaboration and will receive a print.

Needed are a minimum of 20 people to form the circle and make the print, but a larger group would be ideal. The project, including all volunteers, will be limited to a maximum of 50 people.  To reserve, please email your name to [email protected] or call 941-475-2098, ext. 8 to leave your information. After the sitting, the Hermitage invites participants to bring a drink or snack to share in the Open Studio Celebration. A rain date has been set for Friday, March 17 at 2:30 pm.

The Hermitage is a not-for-profit artist retreat located at 6660 Manasota Key Road in Englewood, FL. It invites accomplished painters, sculptors, writers, playwrights, poets, composers and other artists from all over the world for residencies on its beachfront historic campus. Artists are asked to interact with the community during their stay and as a result, Hermitage artists touch thousands of Gulf Coast community residents with unique and inspiring programs each year. Hermitage community programs are partially sponsored by Philanthropist Gerri Aaron, the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and the Woman’s Exchange. In addition, the Hermitage awards and administers the prestigious Greenfield Prize, an annual $30,000 commission for a new work of art, rotating among visual art, music and drama. The Hermitage also partners with the Aspen Music Festival and School to award the annual Hermitage Prize to a composition student during the Festival.
