Johannesburg, South Africa — April 7, 2014. Filmmakers Beverly and Dereck Joubert were honored Saturday night with the SAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award at the South African Films & Television Awards. The world–renowned couple, who are also pioneers in African conservation, were honored for their contribution to and development of South Africa’s burgeoning film industry. Previous Lifetime award recipients include Anant Singh, producer of Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom.

For three decades the Jouberts have produced films in Southern Africa, many of which have raised awareness of the plight of Big Cats and other iconic species that are under severe threat. The global attention their films receive has helped their organization Great Plains Conservation save vast tracts of wilderness from hunting and development.

Eternal Enemies, one of the Joubert’s early films, has been seen by over one billion people around the world. The Jouberts 2011 film The Last Lions was filmed in Botswana and has since become a powerful ambassador for critically endangered lions. In less than a year it reached over 350 million people and continues collecting an array of international awards in the process.

Legadema, the leopard that features in Eye of the Leopard (2006), has become a global ambassador for leopards, while drawing attention to the fur industry, which is decimating their numbers. As National Geographic Explorers–in–Residence, the Jouberts have also founded the Big Cats Initiative with National Geographic to further protect all of the big cats globally, through on–the–ground projects, research, education and ongoing awareness campaigns. Beverly and Dereck Joubert continue to champion Africa’s wildlife and habitat through Great Plains Conservation.
