NORA CHIPAUMIRE RITE RIOT – PART TWO

WORK-IN-PROGRESSAT 92Y HARKNESS DANCE FESTIVAL

February 21-23

NEW YORK, NY: February 12— Nora Chipaumire has changed her 92Y Harkness Dance Festival plans and now intends to concentrate on the new work she’s creating, the second part of rite riot, without showing the first part. Both parts constitute what Chipaumire calls her “inspired response to The Rite of Spring” and both focus on the idea of sacrifice. The first part focused on performance itself as a kind of sacrifice and the female body as a ritual object. Now, for the Festival, Chipaumire presents the second part of the dance as a work-in-progress, looking at sacrifice in the context of family. Dancing with a chorus of male dancers, she considers fathers and brothers and what sacrifices are demanded of them in a family and in society. “I’m also looking at the meaning of their physical presence,” she says, “because there’s an issue of gender affecting the space around it.” The meaning of “African-ness” and “blackness,” as political and economic issues that come to life in black bodies, is central to both parts of rite riot.

For the Festival, with its Stripped/Dressed format, Chipaumire isn’t simply showing a work-in-progress. She will share some of the inspirations for both parts of the work and show how they’re connected to each other. Her hope is that the audience “will understand the trajectory of my thinking and see how my ideas unfold in movement.”

About 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center

In 1935, what became 92nd Street Y’s Harkness Dance Center provided a home to the fledgling American modern dance movement and its leader, Martha Graham. In the decades that followed, every great American dancer and choreographer – visionaries including Alvin Ailey, Merce Cunningham, Jerome Robbins, Agnes de Mille, Robert Joffrey and Donald McKayle – spent time at the Y, building the foundation for modern dance as we know it. Through the generous support of the Harkness Foundation for Dance, the Dance Center continues this proud tradition of dance teaching, creation and performance, serving the professional world and the community at large. Technique classes range from ballet and modern dance to hip-hop and Flamenco. Rounding out the program are several performance programs including the annual 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Festival; a professional development program for dance educators; and several teen dance troupes.
