STATEMENT: MAYOR GARCETTI ON GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION MEASURES PASSED BY STATE SENATE

“As a father, and as the mayor of a city that is working hard every day to curb our share of the national gun violence epidemic, I am outraged that criminals find it so easy to wreak havoc on our communities with weaponry meant for the battlefield.

I commend Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León and the State Senate for taking strong, decisive action to expand background checks, make illegal the sale of semiautomatic rifles with detachable magazines, and take other steps against bloodshed that has cost too many lives in cities throughout California.

Our determination to curb that violence is why, last summer, I signed an ordinance banning the possession of large capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition — because we know that when a shooter has to stop and reload, those precious seconds can save lives. It’s the reason we passed a law that requires guns to be locked while at home and not in use; and it’s why Los Angeles requires ammunition sellers to keep a record of every bullet they sell. Keeping our neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces safe is a cause that everyone should get behind — and I am calling on the Assembly and Gov. Brown to quickly enact these bills into law.” — Mayor Eric Garcetti
