The Manatee County Substance Abuse Coalition and Manatee County Youth Commission to Recognize National Red Ribbon Week

Manatee County, FL – October 23rd to 31st is nationally recognized as Red Ribbon Week and the Manatee County Substance Abuse Coalition, along with the Manatee County Youth Commission, are working to raise awareness of this campaign to address local substance abuse conditions through community-based action, including a Red Ribbon Breakfast and proclamation presentations from local government agencies.

The breakfast will be held on Tuesday, October 21 at 7:15 a.m. at Pirate City, 1701 27th Street East in Bradenton and will feature an expert panel who will respond to questions from teen members of the Manatee County Youth Commission regarding loopholes in Florida’s proposed Amendment 2, which seeks to legalize medical marijuana.

In addition, the Youth Commission members will receive proclamations recognizing Red Ribbon week, locally, at the following government meetings:

  •  Manatee County Commission: Oct. 7th at 9 a.m., 1112 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton
  •  Bradenton City Council: Oct. 8th at 8:30 a.m., 101 12th St. W., Bradenton
  •  Manatee County School Board: Oct. 14th at 5:45 p.m., 215 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton
  •  Palmetto City Commission: Oct. 20th at 7:00 p.m., 516 8th Ave. W., Palmetto

The Red Ribbon Week campaign was launched in 1985 by the National Family Partnership to honor the memory of DEA agent Enrique Camarena who was murdered, that same year, by the drug cartels he was investigating.

All activities are free and open to the public; however, due to limited space, RSVPs are required to attend the breakfast. Please RSVP to [email protected] or 941-748-4501 ext. 3490 by October 14th.
