What a resume! LACO principal Wade Culbreath has played on nearly 400 soundtracks for the motion picture studios, including the Academy Award-winning scores for Aladdin, Pocahontas and Life of Pi. More recently, he was principal percussion for Frozen and Transformers, and the timpanist for A Millions Ways to Die in the West.

In Mozart to Marimba, Wade takes the stage with LACO as the soloist in a rare composition by Emmanuel Séjourné that showcases the unique qualities of the marimba and unites the instrument with the strings in one accessible and pleasing language. Wade describes how he first heard the piece, “[It] caught my ear a few years ago when a couple of colleagues recommended it to me. The thing about this piece that really appeals to me is [that] it’s based on flamenco music, and I was fortunate enough to hear some authentic flamenco in Madrid when I was on tour there years ago.”

We stopped by Wade’s studio to catch him in action. Watch our interview with Wade and take a sneak peek at Séjourné’s Marimba Concerto.

The first concerto on the program, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 18 in B-flat major, features Richard Goode who is known for the “wondrous subtleties” and “ethereal passage work” (Los Angeles Times) of his interpretation of Mozart and his “staggering virtuosity and musical insight” (The Times of London). Judging by the praise Goode consistently receives in the press, this will be an evening to remember.
