Lights on Tampa will return in February of 2015, and artists interested in participating have until Friday, April 4, to respond to the Request for Qualifications. New and existing work will be installed on multiple sites in and around Tampa’s picturesque Riverwalk in connection with this exciting temporary public art project.

Lights On Tampa seeks to bring multi-sensory and memorable experiences for the visitor through diverse and interactive programming. For this event, organizers are seeking a range of artwork that in some way addresses the phenomenon of light or which use or incorporate light in a unique or innovative way. The artwork being sought includes, but is not limited to, light-based, technology-driven or inspired, temporary, interactive/engagement and mobile-based applications. Short animations may also be considered, as well as artworks designed for gobos.

A public/private partnership between the City of Tampa’s Art Programs Division and the Public Art Alliance, a 501(c)(3) organization, Lights on Tampa began in 2006 with the desire to bring something bold, high-quality and “on the moment” to Tampa.

“The objective was to literally put the spotlight on Tampa and its regional assets,” notes the Call to Artists.

The program returned in 2009 when Tampa hosted the NFL’s Super Bowl XLIII. In 2010, the program was recognized by Americans for the Arts as one of the 50 most significant art programs in the U.S. in the last 50 years.

Project budgets established for Lights on Tampa 2015 range from $2,500 – $10,000 for existing work, and $10,000 – $25,000 for new commissions. Potential sites for temporary installations include:

  • Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park
  • Riverwalk extension at Kennedy Bridge
  • Kenney Blvd. Riverwalk plaza
  • Kiley Park Amphitheatre
  • Krauss pump station
  • Bridge tender house at Platt Street Bridge
  • USF Park at Convention Center and Riverwalk
