Tanna Frederick (“LuLu”) and Siaka Massaquoi (“Clay”) will star in a staged reading of Dutchman, directed by Levy Lee Simon on Monday, December 15 at 8pm at the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles. The event, A Celebration of Amiri Baraka, is presented by Kilpatrick-Cambridge Theatre Arts and Jazzlion productions. Mr. Robert Hooks, the original “Clay” in Dutchman, will also appear to make a special introduction.

Dutchman, created by Amiri Baraka, is an Obie Award-winning play originally performed in 1964 at the Cherry Lane Theatre in Greenwich, New York.

Frederick discovered her love of acting early in life, performing regularly at the Steben’s Children’s Theatre in her hometown, Mason City, Iowa.

She continued her theatrical education at the University of Iowa and after graduation with a degree in theatre arts and political science; she moved to Los Angeles on to pursue her dream.

She soon struck up a friendship with independent filmmaker Henry Jaglom that transformed both of their careers forever.

Together they have collaborated on six films, including Hollywood Dreams (2006), Irene In Time (2009), Queen Of The Lot (2010), Just 45 Minutes From Broadway (2012), The M Word (2014) and the upcoming Ovation.

While perhaps best known for her film work, Frederick is also a mainstay of the Los Angeles theatre community. Last year she won the LA Stage and Eddon awards for Best Actress for N. Richard Nash’s The Rainmaker at the Edgemar Theatre. Other recent stage roles include starring turns in Jaglom’s Just 45 Minutes From Broadway, A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia and Claire Chafee’s Why We Have A Body, a production that Frederick also directed.

The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles is located at 1237 West 1st street, Los Angeles, CA 90026. A reception will follow after the performance.

This is a free event. For reserved seating, please email producer Erik Kilpatrick at [email protected].
