Jonathan NOTT & the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra Celebrate its 70th Anniversary Season — 2016/17 Season Line-up —

 

Tokyo Symphony Orchestra Music Director Jonathan NOTT will appear in his 3rd season to conduct a total of six works at nine performances: four Suntory Hall Subscription Concert Series, two Kawasaki Subscription Concert Series, two Tokyo Opera City Series, and a Masterpiece Classics Series. Featured will be a broad range of works by composers from the classical to contemporary periods with a focus on Nott’s main repertoire of the Late Romantic period, ranging from Schoenberg, Berg, Brahms, Bruckner, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Wagner, Dutilleux, Schumann, Ligeti, Purcell, R. Strauss, Toru Takemitsu and Debussy. (NB: The works of the underscored composer names will be performed for the first time by Nott and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.)

Subscription Concerts at Suntory Hall (ten performances)

The first performance was held in 1947 as the ‘Toho Symphony Orchestra’, the predecessor to the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. This is a concert series where the ‘present and future’ of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra can be heard no matter what era.

Kawasaki Subscription Concerts at Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall (five performances)

These concert series are held at Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall, now known worldwide for its first-rate acoustics. This is where the TSO are based, and where we bring to our audiences five performances selected from the Suntory Hall Subscription Concerts.

Tokyo Opera City Series at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall (six performances)

Since its start in 1998, internationally noted conductors and artists, including the TSO conductors, are the first to appear in Japan at this concert series. Saturday afternoon performances begin from 2 pm, with the added appeal that senior citizen discounts are offered only at this concert series.

Masterpiece Classics Series at Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall (ten performances)

Concert series of the standard repertoire performed on weekend afternoons since 2004. This concert series enjoys high popularity where many masterpieces performed or conducted by maestros can be enjoyed.

Schoenberg: ASurvivor from Warsaw, Berg: ‘Lulu’ Suite, Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem (AGerman Requiem)

In the first half will be performed ‘A Survivor from Warsaw’ and the ‘Lulu’ Suite, each of which are the life stories of men and women who befell tragic destinies. In the latter half will be performed the German Requiem, a work which established Brahms’ reputation as a noted composer, as the third joint performance with the TSO Chorus, the members in whom Mr. Nott has placed much trust since the Mahler: Symphony No. 8. At these series a soprano and baritone performing a dual role of both singing and narration will be featured. This interesting programme by Mr. Nott & the TSO of the romantic and functional works of Schoenberg and Berg is “Nott’s World” indeed!

Suntory Hall Subscription Concert Series in July 2016 Bruckner: Symphony No. 8

Following the Bruckner Symphonies No. 3 and No. 7, the third Bruckner work to be performed will be the Bruckner Symphony No. 8, which can be said to be one of the representative works of the late Romantic Period. Although this work is not part of the Bruckner symphonic cycle, by taking on one Bruckner work per year, Mr.

Nott & the TSO have certainly become very familiar with this composer’s works. It will be interesting to hear how the No. 8 which, according to Mr. Nott, refers to Schubertian themes and expresses a humanistic main theme on one hand, and yet areas of ‘God’ on the other, will be performed.

Suntory Hall Subscription Concert Series in October 2016 Beethoven: Violin Concerto, and Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10

Shostakovich, which is important repertoire for Mr. Nott along with Mahler, Bruckner, Wagner and the like will be performed, where amongst these the Symphony No. 10, hailed by many as a masterpiece, is said to be the actual concluding work of the wartime symphonies, and is the most eccentric of the works. The Beethoven work will feature violinist Isabelle FAUST, who is active on the grand stages worldwide, where her performance will be highly anticipated. This programme will also be performed at the TSO 70th anniversary European tour.

Suntory Hall Subscription Concert Series and Kawasaki Subscription Concert Series in December 2016

Wagner: Prelude to Act 1 of the Music Drama Tristan und Isolde, Dutilleux: Cello Concerto Tout un monde lointain (Awhole distant world), and Schumann: Symphony No. 2

Performed will be the ‘Prelude of Act 1’ of Tristan and Isolde, which is the most important amongst Mr. Nott’s crucial Wagner repertoire. Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, selected to ‘brush up the virtuosity of the orchestra members’, will also be performed. The performance of Dutilleux Concerto, which will mark 100 years since the birth of the composer, will feature Johannes MOSER as a solo cellist, who has now grown to achieve world-class status as a cellist. We hope our audiences will enjoy the ‘journey of musical history’ from Germany to France, as brought to you by Nott & the TSO.

Opera City Series in April 2016

Ligeti: Atmosphères, Purcell: Fantasies & In Nomines for the Viols [Viola da gamba], Ligeti: San Francisco Polyphony, R. Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spoke Zarathustra)

Performed will be a ‘cosmic programme’ featuring two works which appeared in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, beginning with ‘Atmosphères’, and ending with Zarathustra. The Ligeti and Purcell works will be performed in alternation without interruption, where it is hoped that the audience will enjoy the contrast of the polyphonies (i.e.

music consisting of multiple independent voices)’ of completely differing eras as well as musical compilations, as a programme of a journey which transcends the cosmos as well as the space-time associated therewith.

Opera City Series in November 2016

Toru Takemitsu: Requiem for Strings, Debussy: La Mer, Brahms: Symphony No. 1

Performed will be: the Requiem for Strings, one of the representative Toru Takemitsu works which was commissioned and premiered by the TSO in 1957; Debussy’s La Mer, which was inspired by [ukiyo-e artist] Katsushika Hokusai’s rendering of an image of Mt. Fuji nestled between ocean waves; as well as Symphony No. 1 from amongst the Brahms symphonies which Mr. Nott considers as crucial repertoire. This programme, the theme of which has a ‘Japan / Japan & Europe / Europe’ connection, will also be performed at the TSO 70th anniversary European tour.

AProgramme of Russian Works to be conducted by Resident Conductor Norichika IIMORI Popov: Symphony No. 1, Prokofiev: Cantata Alexander Nevsky

Tchaikovsky No. 4 to be conducted by Krzysztof URBAŃSKI

Resident Conductor Norichika IIMORI, who will conduct five performances in 2016, will focus on Russian works. The Symphony No. 1, composed by Gavriil Nikolayevich Popov who was active in the Soviet Union during the same period as Shostakovich, is a colossal work requiring a performance time of about 50 minutes. Although introduced as a masterpiece of the Russian avant-garde works, it has rarely been performed since the 2nd World War. Alexander Nevsky is a work which was rearranged for concert performances from the music of the Sergei Eisenstein-directed 1938 Soviet Union film of the same title. (Suntory Hall Subscription Concert Series in August 2016 and the Opera City Series in January 2017)

Krzysztof URBAŃSKI will appear for one performance to conduct the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3 featuring [pianist] Alexander ROMANOVSKY, and for the first time with the TSO, to also conduct the Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 (at the Suntory Hall Subscription Concert Series in May 2016).

Laureate Conductor Hubert SOUDANT To Conduct Berlioz: La damnation de Faust (The Damnation of Faust) Mikhail PETRENKOAppear in the Role of Méphistophélès

Since becoming Honorary Conductor, Laureate Conductor Hubert SOUDANT has been taking vigorous efforts towards French music as directly passed down from his teacher Jean Fournet, and will be taking on Berlioz’ magnum opus La damnation de Faust during the long-awaited 70th anniversary since the founding of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. Featured soloists will be world-class singers such as Mikhail PETRENKO, Michael SPYRES, Sophie KOCH, as well as Tatsuhiko KITAGAWA from Japan. This work which Berlioz composed over many years as if possessed after reading Göethe’s Faust, will surely be one of the finest examples of works to be performed at the 70th anniversary since the founding of the TSO. Laureate Conductor Kazuyoshi AKIYAMA To Conduct

Messiaen, Akio Yashiro, Schmidt, Krommer, and Shostakovich: Symphony No. 9 which was Performed in Japan for the First Time by the TSO

Another Laureate Conductor, Kazuyoshi AKIYAMA, will appear to conduct five works at six performances, where a challenging programme of Messiaen, Akio Yashiro and Schmidt will be performed (at the Suntory Hall Subscription Concert Series in January 2017). The programme will moreover feature the number ‘70’ to celebrate 70 years since the founding of the TSO, where Haydn: Symphony No. 70, Krommer: Concerto Symphony for Flute and Violin, as well as Shostakovich: Symphony No. 9 will be performed (at the Opera City Series in March 2017). In March 1948, the Shostakovich No. 9 was performed for the first time in Japan by the TSO, conducted by Masashi Ueda.

Guest Conductors To Appear In 2016 Season

Dmitry SITKOVETSKY, Daniele RUSTIONI, Masaaki SUZUKI, Michiyoshi INOUE, Lorenzo VIOTTI, Simone YOUNG, and Shi-Yeon SUNG

Daniele RUSTIONI, a talented Italian conductor who is now in the limelight as a conductor of the next generation, was born in 1983 and has been appointed as the principal conductor of the Opéra National de Lyon in France from 2017, who is now regarded as a ‘top successor to Claudio Abbado’. Rustioni will make his TSO Suntory Hall Subscription Concert Series debut with a programme of not only with the Italian repertoire similar to those conducted by the late Claudio Abbado, but also with Russian works, which are his speciality. Also scheduled to perform is Francesca DEGO, a young Italian violinist receiving worldwide attention in recent years, including a recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. In July 2014, Italian-French Lorenzo VIOTTI, the son of the highly commended late Marcello Viotti, conducted the TSO as an understudy of Principal Guest Conductor Krzysztof URBAŃSKI, and will re-appear where the programme may include repertoire which expresses the life of Viotti, who studied in Vienna. In August 2015, he won the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award, which catapulted him into the limelight. (Opera City Series in September 2016 & Masterpiece Classics Series in September 2016)

Simone YOUNG, who will make her first appearance with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, will be conducting a joint performance with the TSO in the November 2016 Nikikai Opera production of Ariadne auf Naxos. She

serves concurrently as the Artistic Director of the Hamburg State Opera and Music Director of the Hamburg Philharmonic, and is also known as the first female to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Cellist Alisa WEILERSTEIN, commended by Maestro Daniel Barenboim, will also appear before Japanese audiences for the first time to perform the well-known Dvořák Cello Concerto.

Other conductors who will appear before the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra for the first time are Azerbaijan-born Dmitry SITKOVETSKY who will conduct the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (at the Masterpiece Classics Series in May 2016). Masaaki SUZUKI, known as a leader of Bach performances, will perform together with his son Masato Suzuki, works by Saint-Saëns (with organ) as well as Mozart works (at the Masterpiece Classics Series in June 2016).

Also conducting will be Shi-Yeon SUNG, a spirited young female conductor who worked as an assistant conductor with the Boston Symphony Orchestra during the 2007/08 season, who also won the 2007 Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition which was directed by TSO Music Director Jonathan Nott. 15th Anniversary Since The Founding of The Series & 30th Anniversary Since the Opening of Suntory Hall

The Subscription Concert Series for Children began in 2002 in Japan for the first time with the joint sponsorship of Suntory Hall, and is now held four times annually, where the 15th anniversary of this concert series will be celebrated in 2016. Conductors, orchestra and staff of Suntory Hall, including musicians known throughout Japan such as conductors Kazuyoshi AKIYAMA, Sachio FUJIOKA, Shigeo GENDA, Norichika IIMORI, and soloists Tomonori SATO [trumpet], Mariko SENJU [violin], Kanon MATSUDA [piano], Yuko SATO [soprano], will all take part in planning the programme for the 2016 season. Music Director Jonathan Nott will stage a concert performance of the Mozart opera, where baritone Sir Thomas ALLEN will be on hand as a director, and where Mr. Nott himself will also perform on the hammerflügel [fortepiano]. European Tour To Celebrate The TSO 70th Anniversary

~ Recovery, Exchanges, And The Future ~

In 2016, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra will mark 70 years of their founding, and will embark on a European tour together with Music Director Jonathan Nott, who together with the TSO were kindly invited to give all the performances, where these concerts are intended to be wide-ranging international friendly exchange in five cities in five countries.

Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall, where the TSO is based, suffered great damage in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and in the five years since the disaster, so much encouragement and support were received from so many people in Japan and overseas. Thus, Nott and the TSO will finally embark on a European tour, where they will exhibit the fruits of their labour on the pinnacle of global stages at international music forums such as the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien (Society of Friends of the Music in Vienna) as well as in Wrocław (EU Capital of Culture for 2016). Moreover, as a symbol of post-earthquake recovery, they will make their presence known widely in Japan and abroad, thus enhancing their chances to perform at the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics.

At these overseas concerts will be performed: Toru Takemitsu: Requiem for Strings which was historically premiered by the TSO from amongst a number of such premiered works; Debussy: La Mer, a symphonic poem composed from having been inspired by a Japanese woodblock print; Beethoven and Brahms as featured composers of Western and Central Europe; as well as Shostakovich as a featured composer of Eastern Europe,

where Jonathan Nott & Tokyo Symphony Orchestra will take on a bold and broad range of works whilst keeping a Japanese charm, and where moreover featured as a soloist will be the internationally renown violinist Isabelle FAUST.
