While new technology and media platforms continue to redefine the entertainment industry, audio continues to play a key role. “With all of the new technology, the demand for vocal talent is expanding,” says John Burr, the founder of John Burr Voice Dynamics.

And he should know. Burr has more than 30 years experience as a professional voice coach, recording engineer, singer, actor, and audio/video producer. He has written and produced scripts in all media, and has directed many well-known national performers. His decades in the industry have provided him an in-depth understanding of every stage of the production process.

According to Burr, the demand for voiceover talent ranges from the traditionally smooth announcer’s voice, to the rough and gravelly, to the sensual. “Millions of people have some kind of natural speaking talent,” he says. “But it’s a big leap from that to the professional level. That’s where I come in.”

Burr’s workshop serves three purposes. First, it allows each participant to discover his or her comfort level with voiceover performance. Second it offers participants to receive and respond to professional direction and critique. Finally, students can use the feedback and subsequent assessment to decide whether or not to pursue a voiceover training program.

“Becoming a top-level voiceover talent is far from easy,” says Burr. “It demands training with a seasoned professional and a commitment to the learning process.”

According to Burr, following through on that training is well worth it. He explains that voiceovers are used in new media formats, radio and TV commercials, movies, documentaries, political campaigns, animations and cartoons, and for corporate projects. Many of his former voiceover students have narrated for Discovery and Learning Channels, History Channel, National Geographic, and national audiobook producers, as well as many of America’s well-known corporations, such as Marriott, Xerox, IBM, Danaher, Carey International, and Lockheed-Martin. “There is a host of viable opportunities for voiceover actors,” says Burr. “This can be an extremely lucrative career.”

Students who study with Burr appreciate his insight and honest assessment of their potential, his nurturing and expert instruction, his professionalism and his connections within the voice talent industry.

Lorraine Ziff, a student from Longboat Key, says that her work with Burr has lead to lucrative jobs, including being chosen as the voice of the International Television and Video Association awards in Los Angeles. “John is a fantastic teacher who is patient, funny, professional and results-oriented,” says Ziff. “The demo disc we created has gotten me compliments and, more importantly, work. I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to get involved in a voiceover career.”

Shane Morris of Sarasota also saw his voiceover career take off after working with Burr. “With his deep knowledge of the art and the industry, John Burr helped me sculpt my voice into a professional instrument,” he says. “I’ve landed some very impressive jobs, including national accounts, in my first year. John Burr is dynamic.”

Along with the workshop, Burr also provides one-on-one coaching for people ready to start or continue a career in the expanding voiceover industry. “We study the art of script interpretation, develop an understanding of language dynamics, learn how to control the parameters of on-mike technique, and build confidence in your ability to handle audition and project scenarios,” says Burr.
