The Washington Post calls him “one of Israel’s leading high-tech venture capitalists.” Jon Medved, the founder and CEO of OurCrowd, has invested in more than 100 Israeli start-ups, helping 12 of them get in excess of $100 million. He joins Barbara Corcoran, the real-estate mogul and tell-it-like-it-is Investor/Shark on ABC’s hit show “Shark Tank,” to discuss the genius of great business ideas. Josh Lambert, the academic director of the Yiddish Book Center and professor at UMass Amherst discusses the integral role Jews have played in the history of obscenity in America. Jews led the charge against obscenity laws and battled literary censorship, but the anti-Semitic stereotype of the lascivious Jew has made many historians hesitant to draw a direct link between Jewishness and obscenity. Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist, humorist, sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor, and in his 72-year career, he wrote and illustrated nearly 50,000 cartoons. His granddaughter, the designer Jennifer George, joins cartoonist Al Jaffee, New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik and cartoon historian Brian Walker to look back at the life and work of this quintessential American cartoonist. Russian Sundays | MUSIC OF RUSSIAN JEWISH COMPOSERS FOR OBOE AND PIANO

Join us in the discovery of “Jewish art music,” a movement that originated at the end of the 19th century in Russia. This recital will feature rarely performed works by composers of the early 20th century, most notably Joseph Achron, Alexander Krein and Solomon Rosowsky. These composers established a unique genre that blended traditional Jewish folk and liturgical music with Western European and Russian Romantic styles. This event is part of 92Y’s Russian Sundays series.

SIMON SCHAMA in CONVERSATION with JONATHAN SAFRAN FOER: THE STORY OF THE JEWS
You may know some of the history of the Jews, but you haven’t heard it the way Simon Schama tells it–full of rich detail and a keen sense of how people really lived. Schama’s The Story of the Jews: Finding the Words 1000 BC-1492 AD (a new book and television series, soon to air on PBS) takes us all over India, Spain, Oxford, Syria, Paris, Cairo and beyond to show how Jews everywhere lived not as a people apart, but as a vital force in any society they joined, inspiring and being inspired by everything around them. He talks with Jonathan Safran Foer, author of the award-winning and best-selling novels Everything Is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, as well as two works of nonfiction: Eating Animals and The New American Haggadah.

When you think of brisket, do you think of slow smoking hefty slabs of Angus beef for over half a day in an eighteen-foot-custom smoker before slowly cooking the meat until it simply falls apart in its own sweet, smoky and mouth-watering deliciousness? Cookbook author, food writer, cooking teacher and chef Pati Jinich is host of the Public Television series “Pati’s Mexican Table.” Joan Nathan regularly contributes to The New York Times, Food Arts Magazine and Tablet Magazine and is the author of ten award-winning cookbooks; six focus on Jewish cooking, two highlight Israeli cuisine and two focus on American cooking. Louisa Shafia is the author of the acclaimed cookbook The New Persian Kitchen and has cooked at restaurants in San Francisco and New York, including Millennium, Aquavit, Pure Food and Wine, and Gobo. Now the intergenerational celebration we call Shababa comes to life on stage for the annual Shababa The Concert! Bring the kids and dance in the aisles to a live band playing old sing-along favorites and new original songs that you’ll be humming on the way out! The concert also features the Shababa Mamas; the Shababa Abbas; the Shababa Nannies, Shababa Bubbies; and the Shababa Sparks -Kids. Everyone’s favorite sloth, Coco (we challenge you not to fall in love with him!) will be on hand too, along with his fellow puppets Bubbie Bracha and Yaroki. So bring your family to meet ours!
