MIAMI –July 27, 2015- The Republican Presidential Candidate and Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush granted his first Spanish-language interview as a Presidential candidate to Telemundo News Anchor José Díaz-Balart today in Orlando, Florida. Highlights of the interview will air today, July 27 on “Noticiero Telemundo” at 6:30 pm/5:30 C. An extended version will be broadcast on the Sunday public affairs show “Enfoque con José Díaz-Balart” this Sunday, August 2 at 12 p.m./11 a.m. C. During the exclusive interview, Jeb Bush committed to make of immigration reform a priority of his Presidency and spoke about the impact Hispanic culture has made on his life since his marriage with Columba Bush.

Below are some highlights of the interview:

  • About immigration reform: “I do make that commitment and I know we can do it [Comprehensive immigration reform if elected President].”
  • On the influence of Hispanic culture in his life: “We eat Mexican food at home, our children are Hispanic, and yes the Hispanic influence is important.”
  • On Huckabee’s Israel comments: “In the case of Mike Huckabee, who is my friend, those words, that use of those type of words doesn’t help, doesn’t help. We must have a more civil policy in this country.”
  • On Donald Trump’s stance on immigration: “I was hurt hearing somebody speaking in such a vulgar fashion. This makes the solving of this problem much more difficult. When we have politicians talking like that, we cannot progress.”…“Besides that, he was offending millions of people that are here legally. It makes no sense. In a political sense, it’s bad and it creates an environment that is worse.”…”And I believe it’s important that I as a candidate offer a more optimistic version than Trump’s negativeness.”
  • On the new policy towards Cuba: “I am totally against his politics [President Obama’s] recognizing the Castro brothers without getting anything in return. This Sunday, there were more people going to jail because they were against the regime, they have not done anything to receive the reestablishment [the diplomatic recognition].”… “I believe that the policy should be that we always want freedom in Cuba, we want democracy to change the relationship, but based on facts. In this case, there aren’t even promises that he’s received to do this. And dictators are not going to leave quietly at night, they don’t leave. We must be vigilant and this president does not recognize that.”
  • On Puerto Rico: “I believe that since they’re a territory where US citizens live, they should receive the respect first for self-determination, and then we should assist them as much as we can in their economic crisis. The manner that maybe we can do this is maybe let the government renegotiate its debt and besides that, change the social contract.”… “Just like Detroit had that process, maybe Puerto Rico will also need to do the same thing, but it’s not allowed by federal law so the congress must act.”
