(New York, NY) Jamie Kilstein & The Agenda are heating up the already blazing NYC summer with a hugely popular Wednesday residency at the East Village’s venerable Sidewalk Café (94 Avenue A). The unprecedented residency continues through July, with only two more dates remaining: Wednesday, July 20th and Wednesday, July 27th. Entry is free. For updates, please visit jamiekilstein.com/gigs.
Kilstein’s epic stand at Sidewalk Café celebrates this week’s long-awaited release of Jamie Kilstein & The Agenda’s much anticipated debut album. A BIT MUCH arrives this Friday, July 22nd via Don Giovanni Records.
Kilstein has been joined throughout the two month Sidewalk Café residency by a truly unique roster of special guests, including Janeane Garafalo, professor/writer/former MSNBC anchor Melissa Harris-Perry who’s appearance went viral, author/gender theorist Kate Bornstein, comedian/Last Night Tonight With John Oliver writer Josh Gondelman, artist/VICE columnist Molly Crabapple, poet/Project V.O.I.C.E. founder Sarah Kay, members of the Upright Citizen’s Brigade taking over the show as various characters, saxophonist Thomas Hutchings, and Welcome To Night Vale‘s Cecil Baldwin. July 20th will see Kilstein & Co. accompanied by Trey Anastasio Band singer/trombonist Natalie Cressman and The Nation‘s Mychal Denzel Smith, while the July 27th finale promises a number of surprise guests. Both shows get underway at 7 pm ET.
Jamie Kilstein & The Agenda heralded “A BIT MUCH” earlier this year with their first ever US tour, culminating in a special NYC homecoming show at Sidewalk Café, broadcast worldwide via Facebook Live. Subsequent weeks have seen the JK&TA residency livestreamed to ever-increasing audiences in excess of 1,000 viewers.
Jamie Kilstein & The Agenda is also slated to light up a series of upcoming festivals, including Sidewalk Café’s world-famous Summer Antifolk Festival 2016, set for August 9th-12th, and a Mondo.NYC Music Festival and Tech Summit‘s closing night concert in September. The band will also be among the diverse artists performing at The New Alternative Music Festival, a one-time-only “pro-weirdo event” to be presented by Don Giovanni Records this September 16th-18th at Asbury Park, NJ’s historic Asbury Park Convention Hall. Tickets for NAMF – also starring Screaming Females, Downtown Boys, Ought, Laura Stevenson, Antibodies, Chain and The Gang, and much, much more – are available now. Additional live dates will be announced soon. For updates, please visit jamiekilstein.com/gigs.
Kilstein – who is the subject of a recent profile on NOISEY – is rolling out a series of bootleg videos recorded live at Sidewalk Café, including a powerful improvisation alongside Kate Bornstein filmed at a special LGBTQ benefit performance held the week after the tragic mass shooting at Orlando, FL’s Pulse Nightclub. Other highlights include former MSNBC anchor Melissa Harris-Perry speaking frankly since leaving her post at MSNBC, poet Sarah Kay‘s June 8th appearance (backed by JK&TA with Tauk keyboardist Alric A.C. Carter) and a smoking live version of “It’s OK To Think Guys Are Hot,” all at facebook.com/jamiekilsteinfanpage.
Recorded last December at Woodstock, NY’s Applehead Studios with veteran indie rock producer Kevin Salem (Giant Sand, Mike Doughty, Rachael Yamagata) behind the board, A BIT MUCH sees Kilstein wielding trademark wit, rage, and compassion in his ongoing war with the greedheads and homophobes, misogynists and morons that stand in the way of both peace and progress.Kilstein’s colloquial punk blues see him walking a path tread by experimental artists spanning iconic provocateurs like Henry Rollins and Jello Biafra to such contemporary bands as La Dispute and Listener. A guitarist since his teens, the New Jersey-born Kilstein has transformed his often hilarious, always acute insights into an idiosyncratic, intricately constructed, songcraft pairing urgent rants with riotous riffs and with a beat you can tear down the system to. Songs like “How Not To Be A Dick (To Women)” and “Tiny Humans” are, like Kilstein himself, deeply rooted in 90s-era alt.rock, equal parts punk energy, hard-edged hooks, and a classicist sense of musicality and adventure.Sonically exciting and passionately performed, with “A BIT MUCH,” Jamie Kilstein & The Agenda fire off a righteous rock ‘n’ roll salvo straight into the face of our complacent and still too conservative culture.
A BIT MUCH has already begun drawing advance praise, with “Fuck The NRA” named “Protest Song of the Week” by Shadowproof.com. “An explosion of rage, compassion, hilarity and humanity,” raved Virginia’s Falls Church News Press. “Songs like “F*** the NRA” unapologetically profess the group’s political leanings and show off their musical prowess… (Kilstein is) combining his passion for radical politics with lifelong love of music and infusing all of that with equal parts fierce satire, playful absurdity and refreshing earnestness.” “Kilstein is all in,” noted AXS Entertainment, “and he’s not toning down anything for the pop charts. (“A BIT MUCH”) is still Kilstein, but amplified.”
Jamie Kilstein is of course one of today’s most provocative and progressive voices, his righteous rants and searing social commentary earning him international applause and the enraged ire of the vast right wing media conspiracy. Kilstein has toured the planet from comedy dives to the world famous Sydney Opera House, headlining clubs and festivals while also sharing stages with such like-minded artists as Talib Kweli and the one and only Bad Religion.
Kilstein has accrued extensive national coverage over much of the past decade, highlighted by famously incendiary appearances on TBS’ Conan and Showtime’s The Green Room with Paul Provenza as well innumerable spots on MSNBC, FX, NPR, CNN, and countless other media outlets around the world.
Critical applause has come from all corners, spanning major international publications and online outlets to Kilstein’s fellow writers, musicians, and commentators. “(Jamie Kilstein) mixes music and rants to produce politically charged songs that echo the likes of Joe Strummer and Bill Hicks,” exclaimed The Skinny UK while none other than the legendary Brian Eno declared Kilstein’s work to be “Fantastic! Profound and very funny. I absolutely loved it!” “Hilarious and scathing,” raved Rolling Stone as Time Out enthused, “If you think comedy should be about something more than just froth and banter… If you want to hear someone standing-up for freedom of speech and smacking religious bigotry and political stupidity squarely in the face…then this hugely talented American is the guy for you.”
