- In C, from experimental minimalist composer Terry Riley, is recognized as a groundbreaking masterwork that uses deceptively simple means to achieve extraordinary expressive impact. Written for any number of musicians, the piece weaves riveting melody patterns around a single pulsing note—C. Revolutionary when it was composed 50 years ago, In Cremains the original minimalist masterpiece–and is recreated with each rare performance.
About the performers from the Curtis Institute of Music:
- The Aizuri Quartetis the string quartet-in-residence at the Curtis Institute of Music. Its members have studied at Curtis and the Juilliard School and have participated in the Marlboro and Caramoor festivals as well as the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Music Institute, where they were quartet in residence in 2014. They have appeared throughout North America and Europe with a diverse range of ensembles, including the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, IRIS Orchestra, A Far Cry, The Knights, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Symphony in C, Curtis On Tour, Musicians from Marlboro, Musicians from Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, and counter) induction.
- Called “a new breed of super-musicians!” by the Los Angeles Times, contemporary music ensemble eighth blackbirdis in the midst of a three year residency at Curtis funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Members include Michael J. Maccaferri (clarinet), Tim Munro (flute), Yvonne Lam (violin and viola), Matthew Duvall (percussion), Lisa Kaplan (piano), and Nicholas Photinos (cello). They have won three Grammy Awards, specifically for Best Chamber Music Performance in 2008 and for Best Chamber Music Performance/Small Ensemble Performance in 2012 and again in 2013.
- Flexible in size and scope, the Curtis 20/21 Ensembleperforms a wide range of music from the 20th and 21st centuries, including works by Curtis students and alumni. The ensemble has appeared at major U.S. venues such as the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and Miller Theatre, as well as internationally. The Curtis 20/21 Ensemble collaborates with some of today’s most prominent artists, including Charles Dutoit, eighth blackbird, and Matthias Pintscher. It has presented portrait concerts of iconic composers in residence John Corigliano, George Crumb, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Steven Stucky, among others. Of the ensemble’s Joan Tower portrait program in 2011, the New York Timeswrote, “Ms. Tower could hardly have hoped for more passionate performances.” The Curtis 20/21 Ensemble is led by artistic director David Ludwig.
