HERMITAGE ARTIST EVENTS LINE UP OCT. 27 AND NOV. 2

The Hermitage Artist Retreat invites you to two artist events coming up on their beachfront campus. The first will be an artist salon on Friday, October 27th, beginning at 5:30 pm. The evening will take place in the Hermitage Palm House, 6630 Manasota Key Road, Englewood. On display will be paintings in water color and acrylic by Florida painter Laine Nixon. California photographer Jasmine Swope will talk about her platinum palladium photos created to bring awareness of our fragile marine ecosystem. Returning fellow, New York Poet Laurie Eustis will read from her work. Following the program, visitors are invited to walk the beach and enjoy the sunset.
The second event will be the following Thursday, Nov. 2, also beginning at 5:30 pm. This one will be on the beach and features writing artists who will share their work until sunset at 6:45. Playwright Eleanor Burgess will share the evolution of a scene, from the first draft to the final, including rehearsal stories and painful choices; all that happens before it reaches the stage. Emily Nemens, writer and illustrator, will read from her new manuscript, a novel about spring training. She’ll reveal all that went into researching the project, from a season spent with the LSU press corps, to binge-watching Pete Rose reality TV.
Both events are free. Palm House space is limited so reservations are required for Oct. 27 and requested for Nov. 2, in the event the program moves indoors. To rsvp, simply call 941-475-2098, ext. 8 or send an email to [email protected]. Those planning to enjoy the Nov. 2 presentations on the beach should bring chairs or blankets and any refreshments they care to enjoy.
“As season kicks in, we are lining up our artist community programs,” remarked Bruce E. Rodgers, Hermitage executive director. “Writers of all sorts, painters, photographers and composers are all coming to the Hermitage to work and share their creative processes and work with our audiences. We are very excited about the season ahead and these two programs are a good reason why. There is terrific art to share by amazing creators. Start adding our dates to your calendar and plan to join us often.”
Laine Nixon is a Sarasota-based artist who comes to the Hermitage as the winner of the Individual Artist Award from the John Ringling Towers Fund. Her work has been featured in many shows and galleries throughout Florida. Jasmine Swope is a Serbian-born American photographer based in Santa Monica, CA. A graduate of the Brooks Institute of Photography and former commercial advertising photographer in Los Angeles and London, Ms. Swope specializes in creating large format black and white photographs capturing the human experience with nature. Laurie Eustis is a New York-based writer and poet, whose work has been featured in The New Yorker Magazine.
Eleanor Burgess is an award-winning playwright whose work has been produced at the Manhattan Theatre Club, the Alliance Theatre, the Contemporary American Theatre Festival, the Kennedy Center/NNPN MFA Playwrights Workshop and many others. She is currently a 2050 Fellow at New York Theatre Workshop. Emily Nemens is a writer and illustrator based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is coeditor of The Southern Review. Emily’s fiction and essays have appeared in many publications including Esquire, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. A talented illustrator, she has also had a cartoon published in The New Yorker.
“What an amazing array of artistic talent coming to the Hermitage this season,” continued Rodgers. “These programs are always exciting and inspiring because of the artistry we know will be shared.”
The Hermitage is a not-for-profit artist retreat located at 6630-6660 Manasota Key Road in Englewood, FL. It invites accomplished painters, sculptors, writers, playwrights, poets, composers and other artists from all over the world for residencies on its beachfront historic campus. Many of these artists are Pulitzer Prize, Tony, Emmy, Grammy and MacArthur “Genius” Award winners. Artists are asked to interact with the community during their stay and as a result, Hermitage artists touch thousands of Gulf Coast community residents with unique and inspiring programs each year. Hermitage community programs are partially sponsored by the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council of Arts and Culture and the State of Florida (Section 286.25, Florida Statutes). In addition, the Hermitage awards and administers the prestigious Greenfield Prize, an annual $30,000 commission for a new work of art, rotating among visual art, music and drama. The Hermitage also partners with the Aspen Music Festival and School to award the annual Hermitage Prize to a composition student during the Festival.
