On his 21st birthday, Ross Weisman’s phone and social media notifications were flooded with “happy birthday” messages. But the Deerfield Beach man said he became disheartened by the parallel in technological advances and people’s inability to give meaningful gifts.

So he invented an app.

Weisman came up with an idea for a mobile application that would allow people to send gift cards to friends and family. The app, which has been in the works for over three years and in service for about five months, is called Gwick, a portmanteau for “gift” and “quick.” Weisman said the app has over 6,000 users with new registrations each day.

“How can I make the gifting experience more meaningful again without trying to change the way people operate today?” he asked himself on his 21st birthday.

The app allows users to send gift cards to each other for hundreds of popular stores and companies that can be used in person or online. The app also allows users to attach photos or videos to the gifts so they can record personalized messages or send selfies or pictures of greeting cards if they are not able to be there in person.

“Our new social-gifting feature aims to deepen the shared moments of connection by allowing our customers to express their love, concern and gratitude to the people most important to them with gifts ranging from a cup of coffee to a five-star restaurant meal,” said Samuel Kaye, Gwick’s chief operating officer.

“We want to encourage everyday simple acts of kindness to put a smile on someone’s face at any time or place while elevating the unique gifting experience with personalized messages, videos and or photos attached to gift cards.”

Gwick offers the ability to purchase and send gift cards to companies and stores such as Bed, Bath and BeyondCarnival Cruise LinesChipotleNikeSpotify and hundreds more. Currently, the app is available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

“With the evolution of technology, people are taking shortcuts when it comes to meaningful celebration in their friends’ and families’ lives, but with Gwick we use technology to our advantage to create the only social-gifting application today,” Weisman said.
