NEW YORK —  Grammy Award-winning organist Paul Jacobs, chair of Juilliard’s Organ Department, performs a program of Liszt, Brahms, and Julius Reubke on Wednesday, September 14, at 7:30pm in Paul Hall. The recital is presented as part of Juilliard’s Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series. The program features Liszt’s Fantasy and Fugue on Ad nos, ad salutarem undam; Brahms’s Chorale-Preludes, Op. 122; and Julius Reubke’s Sonata in C Minor. The 75-minute recital will be performed without an intermission and will include a presentation by Mr. Jacobs on organ registration (sonority and color and how an organist goes about selecting stops for a piece of music).

About the program, Mr. Jacobs said: “Liszt’s massive Fantasy and Fugue on the Ad nos is one of the greatest 19th-century works for organ, written on a similar scale as his well-known B-minor piano sonata, and no less significant. This will be followed by an intimate set of Brahms’s late chorale-preludes for organ – his very final compositions – which have captivated not only organists but other musicians like Busoni, who arranged them for piano, and Virgil Thomson, who brilliantly orchestrated them. The program concludes with another monumental organ work by Julius Reubke, one of Liszt’s most gifted students who died at age 24 of tuberculosis. His organ sonata remains a cornerstone of the repertoire.”
Tickets are $20 and will be available beginning August 24 at events.juilliard.edu. Tickets are free for Juilliard students; non-Juilliard students with a valid ID may purchase tickets at $10 at events.juilliard.edu.

The 2016-17 season is a busy one for Mr. Jacobs. In September, Naxos will release a recording of
Michael Daugherty’s organ concerto, Once Upon a Castle, with Mr. Jacobs and the Nashville Symphony. Also in September, he’ll perform Copland’s Organ Symphony with the Cleveland Orchestra on their opening week of the season. In November, he’ll premiere a new organ concerto by Juilliard faculty member Christopher Rouse with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and he’ll perform it in the spring with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the National Symphony. In November, Mr. Jacobs performs Samuel Barber’s Toccata Festiva with the Montreal Symphony.

About Paul Jacobs
The only organist ever to have won a Grammy Award (in 2011 for Messiaen’s Livre du Saint-Sacrement), Paul Jacobs combines a probing intellect and extraordinary technical skills with a repertoire that spans the gamut of music written for his instrument, both old and new. Mr. Jacobs made musical history at the age of 23 when he played Bach’s complete organ works in an 18-hour marathon performance on the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death. Mr. Jacobs has performed in all fifty United States and all over the world, including with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago, Cincinnati, San Francisco, National, and Pacific Symphonies. A fierce advocate of new music, he has premiered works by Samuel Adler, Mason Bates, Michael Daugherty, Wayne Oquin, Christopher Rouse, Stephen Paulus, and Christopher Theofanidis, among others. Mr. Jacobs joined the faculty of Juilliard in 2003, was named chair of the organ department in 2004, and received Juilliard’s prestigious William Schuman Scholar’s Chair in 2007.
