2014 Gilmore Artist Rafal Blechacz’s career has been on the rise since October 2005, when he became the uncontested winner of the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. The first Polish musician in 30 years to win the competition, he was so far ahead of the pack that the judges decided against awarding a second prize. He’ll perform concertos by Mozart and Beethoven with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra at the Festival Gala concert on May 3 and a solo recital in Chenery Auditorium the following week.

Andrew Hsu, 2014 Gilmore Young Artist, piano

An honors graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, 19-year-old Andrew Hsu holds the Rising Star Annual Fellowship there, where he continues his graduate studies. Hsu is an accomlished composer and recently won the Tribeca New Music Young Composer Competition in New York. He will perform a new work at his solo recital, and will make appearances with the Lansing and Battle Creek Symphony Orchestras performing Schumann’s Piano Concerto.

Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner, 2014 Gilmore Young Artist, piano

2014 Gilmore Young Artist Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner makes his solo debut at the Festival in this recital featuring works by Liszt, Ravel, Chopin, and Beethoven, as well as one of his own compositions. Currently residing in New York, Sanchez-Werner is studying at The Juilliard School under Yoheved Kaplinsky, chair of Juilliard’s Piano Department. Sanchez-Werner is the youngest person to have been admitted to Juilliard as a full-time conservatory student.
