(Sarasota, FL) – Held over by popular demand, Over the River and Through the Woods is now playing through August 16. Described by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune as a “Sweet spot of love, caring, and humor,” this witty, warm-hearted production reminds audiences about the importance of family along with a few funny Italian family traditions. Single tickets range from $36-$39 and can be purchased online at floridastudiotheatre.org, by phone at (941) 366-9000, or by visiting the Box Office.

Critics have weighed in on this funny family drama. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune says it has, “An engaging push and pull” and is “Charming” with characters that “Seem like a real family.” The Observer calls it a, “Warm-hearted slice of Italian-American life,” and “A crowd-pleasing night of theatre.” Audiences agree calling it, “Delightful,” “Absolutely awesome” and “Hysterical.”

Director Kate Alexander shares her passion for family-centered comedy of all cultures stating, “It’s funny, searing, and ultimately so very true. I love this play. I love it not only because I laugh and see my Greek heritage, (I even put a 1925 photo of my immigrant Greek Yia Yia on the set!), but because we see ALL families in it.”

Filled with matchmaking grandparents, never-ending leftovers, and the unbreakable bonds of the Cristano family, DiPietro creates a deeply honest drama that reaches the heart of every generation, young and old. Alexander elaborates further stating, “Now more than ever the family is at the forefront of our thinking. With recent movements in society it’s showing us that ‘family’ is ultimately the strongest Institution we will ever have. Relish it! The prices we pay for this kind of love and commitment can never be replaced. Indeed, it is the very depth of what it means to be human.”

About Florida Studio Theatre

Known as Sarasota’s Contemporary Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre was founded in 1973 by Jon Spelman. Starting out as a small touring company, FST traveled to places such as migrant camps and prisons. The company then acquired the former Woman’s Club building, becoming the first permanent venue. Shortly after Richard Hopkins arrived, the building was purchased and renamed The Keating Theatre. In the years that followed, Florida Studio Theatre established itself as a major force in American Theatre, presenting contemporary theatre in its five theatre venues: the Keating Theatre, the Gompertz Theatre, the Parisian style Goldstein Cabaret and John C. Court Cabaret, and Bowne’s Lab Theatre.

Even with its growth, Florida Studio Theatre remains firmly committed to making the arts accessible and affordable to a broad-based audience.  FST develops theatre that speaks to our living, evolving, and dynamically changing world.  As FST grows and expands, it continues to provide audiences with challenging, contemporary drama and innovative programs.
