Leon Fleisher, Pamela Frank, Warren Jones, Geoff Nuttall, Garrick Ohlsson, and Donald and Vivian Weilerstein Lead Master Classes and Concerts at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) has begun the fall semester with some of the most inspired programming in its history. After a successful Kick-off Weekend in September, SFCM’s offerings have continued to attract concertgoers eager to hear the best talent from around the world. Pivotal to SFCM’s role as a hub of artistic excellence is its dedication to presenting world-renowned classical artists in residencies. By giving concerts, public master classes, and individual instruction, these artists show the breadth of their influence in multiple settings.

This semester, SFCM welcomes pianists Leon Fleisher, Warren Jones, and Garrick Ohlsson, violinists Pamela Frank and Geoff Nuttall, and the Weilerstein Duo. Two of the artists (Fleisher and Ohlsson) are participating in multi-part residencies, comprising all manner of musical instruction from individual lessons to master classes and concerts. Many of the events surrounding SFCM’s artist residencies are open to the public.

Fall 2016 Artists-in-Residence

Pamela Frank, violin
October 13-15, 2016
Workshop (13th), Master Class (15th)

Avery Fisher Prize recipient Pamela Frank is known the world over for her extraordinary technique and lyricism. Two events in October put the renowned violinist’s expertise on display, a public workshop and a master class at SFCM’s Osher Salon and Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall, respectively.

Garrick Ohlsson, piano
October 14, 2016
Master Class

As one of the world’s most accomplished pianists, Garrick Ohlsson performs repertoire from nearly every musical period. His interest in core repertoire, as well as contemporary music, makes him the ideal teacher to lead a master class of disparate performance styles. Ohlsson presents this public event at SFCM’s Sol Joseph Recital Hall. Ohlsson returns to SFCM in January and April 2017 for additional residency periods.

Warren Jones, collaborative piano
October 25-28, 2016
Master Class (28th)

Warren Jones is among the most sought-after collaborative pianists performing today. He has accompanied and performed with luminaries such as Stephanie Blythe, Eric Owens, Marilyn Horne, and Thomas Hampson, among many others. Jones returns to his alma mater to give a public master class at the Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall.

Leon Fleisher, piano
November 1-3, 2016
Master Class (2nd)

Leon Fleisher, a living legend in the world of performance and pedagogy, has already completed the first of his four-part residency at SFCM this season. He continues his series of public master classes at the institution in November at the Sol Joseph Recital Hall before returning for events in February and March/April.

Geoff Nuttall, violin
November 1-3, 2016
Master Class (1st), Concert (3rd)

Co-founder of the intrepid St. Lawrence String Quartet, violinist Geoff Nuttall has been at the forefront of musical instruction in both solo and ensemble settings, acting as a teaching assistant with groups such as the Juilliard, Tokyo, and Emerson string quartets. In November, he gives a public master class and a concert at the Sol Joseph Recital Hall and Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall, respectively.

Donald and Vivian Weilerstein, violin and piano
November 7-11, 2016
Concert (10th)

This year, Donald and Vivian Weilerstein celebrate 40 years as a performing duo. Their combined career as collaborative artists has led them to be among the most desired clinicians and performers today. The Weilersteins come to SFCM this season for a week-long residency that includes a concert at the Sol Joseph Recital Hall.

In addition to these artist residencies, SFCM hosts master classes, workshops, and concerts with many other distinguished musicians. Artist residencies continue into the spring semester; visit calendar.sfcm.edu to see a full list of upcoming events.
