The MuseBox today announced that Eugene Ripper will return to New York City’s East Village on September 17th to launch his new single, “HangmanRipper, one of Canada’s most respected and storied indie modern rock performers, will perform a free all ages show at Sidewalk Cafe. Still on tour in support of last year’s Fast Folk Underground III (Quiet Light), Ripper continues to earn the respect of both fans and critics. The Montreal Gazette describes Ripper’s music as “hard-strummed acoustic folk music with the intensity of punk,” and raves that “Fast Folk Underground III (Quiet Light) shows him at the top of his game.”

Since his time in seminal Canadian punk faves Stark Naked and The Fleshtones, and then as part of the early 1990’s East Village anti-folk scene, Eugene Ripper has transformed himself into a top-notch alt-folk songwriter with a reputation for deftly blending multiple genres: “Volleying between punk, folk and rock Ripper jumps all over each style, stealing from one and reshaping another until he comes up with a unique sound and vibe all his own.”  Now Magazine (Toronto)

As the 1990s arrived, Ripper went solo and made a splash on the international scene with the release of his first solo album, 1993’s Fast Folk Underground. While living in New York City in the late ‘90s, Ripper wrote and recorded his second album, Faster Than You Think, with Television’s drummer, Billy Ficca.

” One of the first acts I saw at the Sidewalk Cafe was Canadian Eugene Ripper – playing with
the inestimable Billy Ficca and seeming to be the very epitome of AntiFolk ”
