Featuring some of today’s most highly acclaimed soloists and chamber musicians, including Mimi Stillman (Flute ’99); pianist Charles Abramovic (Piano ’76); cellist Gabriel Cabezas (Cello ’13); Thomas Shivone, bass-baritone; and the Dover Quartet

March 30, 2015, Philadelphia, Pa.–The celebrated musicians of Dolce Suono Ensemble perform on the Curtis Presents series Sunday, April 12 at 3 p.m. at the Curtis Institute of Music’s Field Concert Hall. A talented ensemble of Curtis graduates and guest artists, Dolce Suono Ensemble has been dazzling audiences and invigorating the music world since its founding by flutist and Artistic Director Mimi Stillman (’99) in 2005.

With performers that include pianist Charles Abramovic (’76); cellist Gabriel Cabezas (’13); bass-baritone and Curtis student Thomas Shivone; and the Curtis alumni of the Dover Quartet–Joel Link, violin (’11, ’14); Bryan Lee, violin (’11, ’14); Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, viola (’10, ’11, ’14); and Camden Shaw, cello (’10, ’11, ’14)–Dolce Suono Ensemble will perform a varied program of contemporary classics and world premieres.

All of this concert’s music is composed by faculty and alumni composers of Curtis–in celebration of the ensemble’s Curtis roots and 10th anniversary of its founding–including world premieres by Zhou Tian (’05) and Katerina Kramarchuk (’12) commissioned by Dolce Suono Ensemble for this performance. Also on the program are works by renowned alumni Samuel Barber (’34), Ned Rorem (’44), Jennifer Higdon (’88), and David Ludwig (’01) and faculty member Richard Danielpour‘s Remembering Neda, commissioned by Dolce Suono Ensemble and premiered in 2009. Featured composers Richard Danielpour, Jennifer Higdon, Katerina Kramarchuk, David Ludwig, and Zhou Tian will be present for the April 12 performance.

The recital takes place in Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music, 1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $25; limited availability at the door. To inquire about advance sales, call (215) 893-7902 or visit www.curtis.edu/Tickets.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary this season, Dolce Suono Ensemble (DSE) presents highly acclaimed chamber music concerts on its home series in Philadelphia and has performed recently at venues including Southern Exposure (SC), Symphony Space (NY), Smithsonian American Art Museum, Princeton University, Bard College, and Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and served as ensemble-in-residence at Cornell University, Kingston Chamber Music Festival, and Lake George Music Festival. Dolce Suono Ensemble’s dynamic and innovative programming spans Baroque to new music, with 42 world premieres in 10 seasons. DSE was Chamber Music America’s featured American Ensemble and has received praise from the New York Times, which wrote “Ms. Stillman, who founded the group, is not only a consummate and charismatic performer, but also a scholar. Her programs tend to activate ear, heart, and brain.” Active in community engagement, Dolce Suono Ensemble won the Knight Arts Challenge for Música en tus Manos, its initiative with the Latino community.

One of the world’s finest and most selective conservatories, the Curtis Institute of Music offers a tuition-free, performance-inspired learning culture to 175 students from all corners of the world. Nurtured by a celebrated faculty, its extraordinary young musicians graduate to join 4,000 alumni who have long made music history. From Leonard Bernstein to Alan Gilbert, Samuel Barber to Jennifer Higdon, Anna Moffo to Eric Owens, Richard Goode to Jonathan Biss, Curtis alumni personify the school’s commitment to excellence–onstage and in their communities–inventing careers with impact. Recent graduates forging 21st-century careers include Stanford Thompson, CEO of Play On, Philly!; the musicians of genre-crossing trio Time for Three (Zach De Pue, Nick Kendall, and Ranaan Meyer); and Yvonne Lam, violinist in groundbreaking contemporary music ensemble eighth blackbird.

A busy schedule of performances, including more than 200 a year in Philadelphia and around the world, is at the heart of Curtis’s distinctive “learn by doing” approach. Dedicated to a tradition of excellence and innovation since its founding in 1924, Curtis is looking toward its centenary in a flexible and forward-thinking way, evolving strategically to serve its time-honored mission.
