DISNEY/ABC TELEVISION GROUP KICKS OFF LITERACY CAMPAIGN

WITH PARTNERS FIRST BOOK AND DISNEY PUBLISHING WORLDWIDE

BY DONATING 200,000 BOOKS

Burbank, California – February 7, 2014 – Disney/ABC Television Group is partnering with First Book and Disney Publishing Worldwide to share the power of great stories with children in need around the country by putting 200,000 brand new books into their hands. The Literacy Campaign runs February 3rd through March 31st.

Disney/ABC Television Group’smedia campaign will champion children’s literacy and help provide books and educational resources to programs, schools and organizations serving children from low-income families throughout the United States.

The campaign, “The Magic of Storytelling,” will be conveyed throughout the Disney/ABC Television Groupon social media, online, on radio, and on television through Public Service Announcements (PSAs). Entitled “Be Inspired,” the PSA will appear on the ABC Television Network, all eight ABC Owned Television Stations, various ABC Affiliates and Radio Disney’s stations in 24 markets.  The PSA will also be featured on the CMT Taxi TV Network covering 14 cities and in 14,384 cabs on the most active digital out-of-home network in the United States. “The ABC – Branded Cities Alliance Network” — capturing more impressions per day than any other digital network — covers nearly 51,000 sq. ft. and features nine LED Screens including: ABC SuperSign, American Eagle Times Square, The Disney Store Spectacular, EXPRESS Store LED; NASDAQ; Thompson Reuters; 1 Times Square, 7 Times Square and 42 East.

ABC’s “Good Morning America” will feature its hosts talking about their favorite books, and ABC Family, championing literacy on their social networking pages such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter @ABCFamily, Tumblr and Pinterest, will also feature their talent holding their favorite books and sharing why the book means so much to them. Look for the tweets on the Disney Citizenship site @DisneyCitizen and First Book @FirstBook.

If you work with kids in need, or want to help a school or program in your community connect to an ongoing supply of new books, visit www.firstbook.org/BeInspired.

Eligible nominees include any Title I (or Title I eligible) school, any program serving at least 70% kids in need, including after-school programs, shelters and clinics, libraries and early childhood programs as well as all Head Start programs and any organization serving primarily children with disabilities or children from military families.

Having books to read – at home and in the classroom – is the number one predictor of reading success. But the reality for millions of children from low-income families is that books are an unaffordable luxury. Without books, and the intervention of great programs and schools, these children are at risk of falling behind in the classroom, the workplace and beyond.
