OF “WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY” MUSIC VIDEO

“Although [Demi and I] led such different lives, the humanity in the song and the message is something we both felt intensely. Before meeting we already knew this intimate part of each other’s story.”
– Sam Fischer

FOOTNOTES OUTLINE:
(00:14) Narrator: Directed by Dano Cerny, the video follows a group of strangers on a lonely subway journey. Sam felt Dano really captured the humanity of the song in his pitch and made the themes incredibly relatable.

(00:21) Sam Fischer: “Dano’s [treatment] hit me like a ton of bricks – he’s a boss on set, someone I trusted immediately and gives incredible energy for every take.”

(00:37) Narrator: The commuters become locked in increasingly intimate poses as the video progresses. These portrait shots explore the duality of strangers being unified in their own loneliness.

(00:54: Demi Lovato: “You can feel connected to someone out there that’s going through the same thing you’re going through, even though you’ve never met. I think in these times of isolation and loneliness, it’s a really important and timely message.”

(01:13) Narrator: When feeling down, Sam finds solace in music where the lyrics and sentiment reflect his inner narrative.

(01:39) Sam Fischer: “I’m hoping that when people listen to ‘What Other People Say,’ they feel seen and heard, like there’s people out there who understand them.”

(02:02) Narrator: Despite only meeting for the first time on set, Sam and Demi had instant chemistry.

(02:09) Sam Fischer: “Although we’ve led such different lives, the humanity in the song and the message is something we both felt intensely. Before meeting we already knew this intimate part of each other’s story.”

(02:22) Narrator: Securing a license to film music videos on the LA Metro can be tricky…This subway carriage is actually a specially built set with a green screen surrounding it. Lights were installed within the carriage, transforming in colour and intensity as the song progresses, heightening emotion and helping to provide a sense of movement on camera. The embracing Commuters are actually couples in real life so teh emotions portrayed are completely genuine.

(02:54) Sam Fischer: “My favorite part of making the video was watching the monitor whilst Demi was shooting her scenes. She’s such a pro, and the way she comes to life when the camera’s rolling is amazing to see.”

(03:11) Narrator: Whilst the track is a duet, the emotions of each voice are singular, driven by a longing to find another person experiencing the same thing. ‘Togetherness’ is realised in the song’s final harmony, and is also emphasized in the video’s final scene. As they exit the train, Demi and Sam share a look:

(03:21) Sam Fischer: “They are two strangers who feel a connection but aren’t sure what it is.”
