Acclaimed Guitarist Jason Vieaux at the Curtis Institute of Music on October 5

PHILADELPHIA, PA—September 29, 2014—Curtis Presents features Jason Vieaux, faculty member and co-founder of Curtis’s guitar program, in recital on Sunday, October 5 at 3 p.m. at Field Concert Hall. The concert includes a diverse range of music with Albéniz’s Torre Bermeja, Paganini’s Trio in D major, and Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood”, among others—showcasing Jason Vieux’s ability to easily traverse a variety of genres. He is joined by recent graduates Ayane Kozasa, viola (’12) and Gabriel Cabezas, cello (’13), as well as current students Brandon Garbot, violin; Zsche Chuang Rimbo Wong, viola; and Tessa Seymour, cello.

Jason Vieaux, “among the elite of today’s classical guitarists” (Gramophone), is the classical guitarist who goes beyond the classical. He has earned a reputation for putting his expressive gifts and virtuosity at the service of a remarkably wide range of music; and his schedule of recital, concerto, chamber music, teaching and recording commitments is distinguished with return engagements throughout the United States and abroad.

The recital takes place in Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music, 1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Subscriptions for the Curtis Presents four-concert series also include the Sixth Floor Trio, Curtis Brass Faculty, and the Dolce Suono Ensemble, and are available for $80. Single tickets are $25. To purchase tickets, contact the Curtis Patron Services Office at (215) 893-7902 or www.curtis.edu/Tickets.

Curtis Presents honors the school’s unique performance culture with this series featuring Curtis alumni and faculty in recital. As leading experts in their respective fields, featured performers represent the latest in a 90-year tradition of talent, mastery, and passion with a cross-continental reach. All proceeds directly benefit current Curtis students with the hope of inspiring and supporting future generations of virtuosity. The Curtis Presents season is sponsored by Blank Rome LLP.

Jason Vieaux’s solo recitals have been a feature on every major guitar series in North America, as well as many of the important guitar festivals in Asia, Australia, Europe, and Mexico. He collaborates in recitals this season with the Escher Quartet, acclaimed harpist Yolanda Kondonassis, and accordion/bandoneón virtuoso Julien Labro. His passion for new music has fostered premieres of works by Dan Visconti, David Ludwig, Jerod Tate, Eric Sessler, José Luis Merlin, and Gary Schocker. He has performed as a concerto soloist with over fifty orchestras, including Cleveland, Fort Worth, San Diego, Florida, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, among many others, working with renowned conductors such as Miguel Harth-Bedoya, David Robertson, Michael Stern, Jahja Ling, and Stefan Sanderling.

Jason Vieaux continues to bring important repertoire alive in the recording studio as well. His latest album, PLAY, a selection of audience favorites celebrating twenty years of professional touring, was released on January 2014 on Azica Records. Of PLAY, Soundboard Magazine writes, “If you ever want to give a friend a disc that will cement his or her love for the guitar, this is a perfect candidate,” while Premier Guitar claims, “You’d be hard pressed to find versions performed with more confidence, better tone, and a more complete understanding of the material.” Among his previous eleven commercial albums is an Azica disc of Astor Piazzolla’s music with Julien Labro and A Far Cry Chamber Orchestra. Bach: Works for Lute, Vol.1 hit No. 13 on Billboard’s Classical Chart after its first week and received rave reviews from Gramophone, The Absolute Sound, and Soundboard.

Images of Metheny features music by American jazz legend Pat Metheny, who, after hearing this landmark recording, declared: “I am flattered to be included in Jason’s musical world.” Sevilla: The Music of Isaac Albeniz made several top ten lists the year of its release. He recorded his first CD when he was just nineteen years old, and two years later released the top-selling Laureate Series Guitar Recital on the Naxos label. His albums and live performances are regularly heard on radio and online around the world.

In 2012, the Jason Vieaux School of Classical Guitar was launched with ArtistWorks Inc., an unprecedented technological interface that provides one-on-one online study with Mr. Vieaux for guitar students around the world. In 2011 he co-founded the guitar department at the Curtis Institute of Music, and he has taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music since 2001. Mr. Vieaux is a member of the Advisory Board of the Guitar Foundation of America, and is affiliated with Philadelphia’s Astral Artists. His primary teachers were Jeremy Sparks and John Holmquist. In 1992 he was awarded first prize in the prestigious GFA International Guitar Competition, the event’s youngest winner ever. He is also honored with a Naumburg Foundation top prize, a Cleveland Institute of Music Alumni Achievement Award, and a Salon di Virtuosi Career Grant. In 1995, Mr. Vieaux was an artistic ambassador of the United States to Southeast Asia.

One of the world’s finest and most selective conservatories, the Curtis Institute of Music offers a tuition-free, performance-inspired learning culture to 175 students from all corners of the world. Nurtured by a celebrated faculty, its extraordinary young musicians graduate to join 4,000 alumni who have long made music history.
