County to hold Orchard Festival

SARASOTA COUNTY  The Community Orchard Festival, hosted by Sarasota County, is planned for Saturday, June 21, 8:30 a.m. – noon, at Colonial Oaks Park, 5300 Colonial Oaks Blvd. in Sarasota.

The festival will feature free youth birdhouse building workshops (60 spaces), fruit tasting and information on growing fruit trees and the “Growing Fruit Trees and Kids” program.

Registration for this event is required and continues through Thursday, June 19. Registration is available online at parksonline.scgov.net or by calling 941-861-5000.

The event is a partnered endeavor by Sarasota County Parks and Recreation and the Sarasota County Extension of University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences.

“This is a family fun event based around the Community Orchard planted at the Colonial Oaks Park that offers a location to visit growing backyard fruit trees, to attend workshops and festivals, and to learn how to live well with nature,” said Dr. Robert A. Kluson, Agriculture and Natural Resources extension agent III. “We invite everyone to join us for this community festival.”

Come learn about the “Growing Fruit Trees and Kids” program that offers the opportunity to families for a child and parent team to care for a plot in the Community Orchard with a planted fruit tree and to harvest the fruit.
