About Cleveland Orchestra Miami
Celebrating its eleventh season in 2016-17, Cleveland Orchestra Miami was launched in January 2007 during the inaugural 2006-07 season of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.  Cleveland Orchestra Miami serves Miami-Dade with an array of musical presentations by The Cleveland Orchestra, including a series of subscription concerts, education programs, and community engagement activities – touching the lives of more than 20,000 children, students, and adults each year.  Under the leadership of the not-for-profit Miami Music Association, Cleveland Orchestra Miami is supported through the generosity of music-lovers from across South Florida who believe in the power of great orchestral music for adults and young people alike.  Each season of Cleveland Orchestra Miami concerts is presented in partnership with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

Since 2007, community partners have included the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County; Miami-Dade County Public Schools; University of Miami Frost School of Music; New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy; Arts for Learning; Coconut Grove Cares/The Barnyard; Coral Gables Congregational Church concert series; Florida International University; Greater Miami Jewish Federation; “I Have a Dream” Foundation; Miami City Ballet; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs; Miami Music Project; MOCA North Miami; South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center; Overtown Youth Center; Ransom Everglades School; Sunday Afternoons of Music; Temple Beth Am; Archdiocese of Miami; and Wolfsonian-FIU.

FRANZ WELSER-MӦST
Franz Welser-Möst is one of today’s most distinguished conductors. He has served as music director of The Cleveland Orchestra since 2002, with his tenure now extended to 2022.  He holds the Orchestra’s Kelvin Smith Family Endowed Chair.
The Cleveland Orchestra has reached new heights under Mr. Welser-Möst’s direction.  The New York Times recently declared The Cleveland Orchestra the “best American orchestra“ for its virtuosity, elegance of sound, variety of color, and chamber-like musical cohesion. The Cleveland Orchestra has been repeatedly praised for its innovative programming, support for new musical works, and for its success in semi-staged and staged opera productions — including 2014’s critically-acclaimed performances of Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen combining computer-animated stage design with live action, and 2016’s Bartók doublebill of Bluebeard’s Castle and The Miraculous Mandarin created in partnership with The Joffrey Ballet.  In addition to recurring residencies in the United States and Europe, Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra are frequent guests at many prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Lucerne Festival.

During Mr. Welser-Möst’s tenure, The Cleveland Orchestra has been hugely successful in building a new and, notably, a young audience through groundbreaking programs involving students and by working closely with universities.  His commitment to community programs is demonstrated through ongoing music education programs and performances in schools and through a new program of neighborhood residencies designed to partner with vibrant communities across Northeast Ohio.

YO-YO MA
The many-faceted career of cellist Yo-Yo Ma is testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences and to his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. Mr. Ma maintains a balance between his engagements as soloist with orchestras worldwide and his recital and chamber music activities. His discography includes over 90 albums, including 18 Grammy award winners.

Mr. Ma serves as the Artistic Director of Silkroad, an organization he founded to promote cross-cultural performance and collaborations at the edge where education, business, and the arts come together to transform the world. More than 80 works have been commissioned specifically for the Silk Road Ensemble, which tours annually. Mr. Ma also serves as the Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Negaunee Music Institute. His work focuses on the transformative power music can have in individuals’ lives, and on increasing the number and variety of opportunities audiences have to experience music in their communities.

Mr. Ma was born in Paris to Chinese parents who later moved the family to New York. He began to study cello at the age of four, attended the Juilliard School and in 1976 graduated from Harvard University. He has received numerous awards, among them the Avery Fisher Prize (1978), the National Medal of Arts (2001), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010). In 2011; Mr. Ma was recognized as a Kennedy Center Honoree. Most recently, Mr. Ma has joined the Aspen Institute Board of Trustees.  He has performed for eight American presidents, most recently at the invitation of President Obama on the occasion of the 56th Inaugural Ceremony.
