MIAMI – January 26, 2017 – The 2016-17 Cleveland Orchestra Miami season continues in January and February as The Cleveland Orchestra returns to Miami for two consecutive weeks of performances at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, a free community concert at Miami Dade County Auditorium and education activities in the Miami area.

 

JANUARY

The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-Möst perform on January 27 and 28 at 8:00 p.m at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. Professional vocal ensemble, Seraphic Fire joins The Cleveland Orchestra for the first time, performing three of Bach’s cantatas. Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano appears as soloist in Bach’s Cantata No. 34. The program also includes Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony.

 

Again this season, prior to each Arsht Center concert, a Concert Prelude performance for ticket holders will take place in Knight Concert Hall. The January weekend Prelude features Seraphic Fire performing Bruckner, Rheinberger, and Brahms. The Preludes are free and open to all ticket holders for that evening’s concert, seating is general admission. The Concert Prelude programs and artists for the January and February performances are listed at the end of this release.

 

FREE COMMUNITY CONCERT
The Cleveland Orchestra and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts will again present a free community concert as part of its commitment to sharing extraordinary musical experiences in Miami-Dade County. This year’s concert takes place at Miami-Dade County Auditorium on Sunday, January 29 at 3:00 p.m. The program, led by conductor Roderick Cox, features The Cleveland Orchestra performing works by Dvořák, Mendelssohn, and Sibelius, plus Saint-Saëns’s Havanaise for Violin and Orchestra with violinist Elena Urioste.

Tickets for January 29 are currently available to the public and can be obtained in person at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium box office at 2901 West Flagler St., Miami, FL 33135 or online at MiamiDadeCountyAuditorium.org. While admission to the concert is free, tickets are required. There is a limit of six tickets per person. This free community concert is a part of Cleveland Orchestra Miami’s ongoing partnership with the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs to deliver world-class music to Miami’s diverse communities at the County’s various venues. The first free Cleveland Orchestra Miami community concert was held in 2015 at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. In March 2016, a day of free chamber music performances by Cleveland Orchestra musicians took place at branches of the Miami-Dade Public Library System.

MUSIC EXPLORERS

Beginning with our youngest audiences, Cleveland Orchestra Miami education programs seek to inspire music exploration in youth. For preschool and early elementary children, our engaging Musical Explorer programs take the audience on a musical journey through the exploration of musical instruments, one-at-a-time.

 

This season features four Music Explorer performances in January at schools throughout Miami-Dade County. Friday, January 27 the Orchestra visits Lillie C Evans K-8 Center at 1:05 p.m. Monday, January 30 at Charles R. Drew K-8 Center at 9:30 a.m. and W.J Bryan Elementary School at 11 a.m. and Tuesday, January 31 at Pine Villa Elementary at 1 p.m.

 

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Cleveland Orchestra joins students from Coral Reef High School and Frost School of Music for interactive learning sessions on Tuesday, January 31. The Cleveland Orchestra led by Brett Mitchell joins Coral Reef High School at 10:00 a.m. for a side by side rehearsal in which musicians sit amongst the students as they rehearse works by Sibelius and Mendelssohn.

 

At 2:00 p.m. the Orchestra joins Frost School of Music, University of Miami for a new music reading session where music composition students have the opportunity to have Cleveland Orchestra musicians play through their own compositions and receive feedback on the works.

 

FEBRUARY

The first week of February Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in a program featuring Sibelius’ Second Symphony on February 2 and 4 at 8:00 p.m. Nikolaj Znaider joins the Orchestra as soloist for Nielsen’s Violin Concerto.

 

Prelude concerts on February 2 and 4 begin at 7:00 p.m. in Knight Concert Hall and feature Cleveland Orchestra musicians performing Dvořák’s Terzetto.

 

Friday, February 3 at 7:00 p.m., cellist Yo-Yo Ma joins The Cleveland Orchestra as soloist performing Dvořák’s Cello concerto. Also on the program are Smetana’s Overture to The Bartered Bride and Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien.

 

UNDER 18S FREE

As in previous seasons, the Under 18s Free program offers one free ticket with each regular-priced adult paid admission to young people ages 8-17. The Under 18s Free program is designed to encourage families to attend Cleveland Orchestra concerts together.  Under 18s Free tickets are available for all Cleveland Orchestra Miami subscription series concerts. Tickets must be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center Box Office in person or by phone at 305-949-6722.
