City of Los Angeles and Police Protective League Announce Tentative Settlement to Increase Starting Salaries for LAPD Officers
Los Angeles – Mayor Eric Garcetti, City Council President Herb Wesson, and the Los Angeles Police Protective League have reached a tentative settlement to restore starting salary cuts for LAPD officers and equalize salaries for nearly 1,000 LAPD officers hired at lower pay since 2010 due to the fiscal crisis.
Mayor Garcetti said: “With crime down to record levels, I don’t want to lose a single new police officer to another department. This tentative settlement will keep the LAPD competitive and help us keep pushing crime down. The city is currently negotiating a new contract with LAPD’s rank and file officers — those front line men and women who put their lives on the line every day.  This would resolve something we have all wanted to reach agreement on as we move forward with negotiations. I look forward to continuing our work on a fiscally responsible contract agreement that does right by the brave men and women of the LAPD.”
City Council President Herb Wesson said, “We are grateful that our police officers stepped up to help us weather the recession.  I’m pleased we were able to reach a tentative agreement that respects our officers and that will keep them from leaving for other police departments.”
Los Angeles Police Protective League President Tyler Izen said, “We are pleased that after several years we were able to settle our 20 percent salary differential litigation so that the City can stop the exodus of officers who were leaving the LAPD to join other Southern California law enforcement agencies because of the significant pay differential.”
The tentative settlement will be voted on by the Los Angeles City Council during Wednesday’s meeting.
