THE CSOA ANNOUNCES PROGRAM UPDATES TO 2014/15 SEASON PROGRAMS

2014/15 SEASON ON MARCH 24, 2015

CHICAGO—Since the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s (CSOA) announcement of its 2014/15 season earlier this year, a new concert has been added and many programs now have updated artist and repertoire information available.

Tickets for all CSOA-presented events in the 2014/15 season go on sale Friday, August 8 at 10 a.m. and are available online at cso.org, by calling 312-294-3000 or by visiting the Symphony Center box office at 220 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60604.

A Symphony Center Presents (SCP) special concert featuring the world-renowned Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, led by artistic director Stephen Cleobury has been added to 2014/15 season concert schedule on Tuesday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago located at 126 Chestnut Street. This marks the Choir’s third appearance presented by Symphony Center since 2008 and features a program of traditional and contemporary English choral repertoire.

Several other 2014/15 programs have been changed or updated.  Details appear below.

2014/15 UPDATES, CHRONOLOGICALLY BY PROGRAM

  • The 2014/15 MusicNOW series programming for the four-concert series was announced on May 21, 2014. Download the MusicNOW series announcement press release here or access individual program information for the Monday 7 p.m. concerts on September 29, January 19, March 23 and June 1.
  • CSO at the Movies and special film programming featuring the Chicago Symphony Orchestrafor the 2014/15 season was announced on March 27, 2014. Download the announcement release here. There are six film programs in the upcoming season beginning with 1925 MGM silent film Ben-Hur on Tuesday, October 14 at 7:30 p.m. and concluding with Metropolis on Friday, May 29 at 8 p.m.
  • The program for the Symphony Center Presents Piano series concert on Sunday, October 26 at 3 p.m. featuring pianist Maurizio Pollini includes Schumann’s  Arabesque and Kreisleriana as well as Chopin’s Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor, Berceuse and Polonaise No. 6 in A-flat Major, Op. 53.
  • The Symphony Center Presentsspecial concert, Mazowsze Polish Folk Song and Dance Ensemble,scheduled for Wednesday, November 5 at 7:30 p.m. has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • The Symphony Center Presents special concert The Cheiftains scheduled for Sunday, December 7 at 3 p.m. has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Two additional non-subscription performances by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) with Wynton Marsalis have been added. The matinee performance on Saturday, February 14, at 1 p.m. is a Jazz for Young People concert and Saturday, February 14, at 8 p.m. features the JLCO with Wynton Marsalis and a special guest to be announced.
  • The program for the Symphony Center Presents Chamber Musicconcert on Sunday, April 12 at 3 p.m. featuring violinist Hilary Hahn and pianist Cory Smythe includes Schumann’s Sonata No. 1 for Violin and Piano; Debussy’s Sonata for Violin and Piano; and J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 3 for Violin.
  • The program for the Symphony Center Presents Piano seriesconcert on Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. featuring Russian pianist Evgeny Kissin has been changed and now includes Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 21 (Waldstein); Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 4 in C Minor; select Nocturnes and Mazurkas by Chopin and  Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 15 (Rákóczi March).
  • The CSO at the Movies presentation of the silent film Metropolis on Friday, May 29 at 8 p.m. will be led by conductor Cristian Macelaru.

PERFORMANCE UPDATES FOR 2014/15 PROGRAMS OF THE NEGAUNEE MUSIC INSTITUTE AT THE CSO

Once Upon A Symphony featuring Members of Chicago Symphony Orchestra are specially designed programs for children ages three to five with age-appropriate music, storytelling, video projections, activities, sets and costumes that give young children a fun introduction to classical music and encourage them to make music at home.  Performance dates for the two unique productions of Once Upon A Symphony for the 2014/15 season have been announced and are as follows:

The Little Red Hen

  • Saturday, January 10, 2015, 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
  • Saturday, February 21, 2015, 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
  • Saturday, March 7, 2015, 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.


Jack and The Beanstalk

  • Saturday, April 11, 2015, 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
  • Saturday, April 18, 2015, 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
  • Saturday, April 25, 2015, 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

Repertoire for the CSO Family Matinee series designed for families with children ages five through nine has been updated for its three Saturday matinee concert programs.  Details are as follows:

The Downtown Sounds program presented Saturday, November 22 at 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. now includes selections and excerpts from Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30; Gershwin’s An American in Paris; Smetana’s The Moldau from Má vlast; Resphigi’s Fountains of Rome; Tchaikovsky’s “1812” Overture and John Alden Carpenter’s impressionistic orchestral suite Adventures in a Perambulator.

The Carnival of the Animals program presented Saturday, March 21 at 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. now includes Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird; Bartók’sRomanian Folk Dances; and SaintSaëns’ Carnival of the Animals;.

The Tchaikovsky Spectacular program presented Saturday, May 2 at 11a.m. and 12:45 p.m. highlights selections from some of Tchaikovsky’s most famous repertoire including excerpts from Symphony 2, 4, 5 and 6; The Nutcracker, Suite No. 1 in D Minor; Serenade in C Minor for Strings, Op. 48 and Romeo and Juliet. The program also features guest dancers from Hubbard Street 2.

The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the CSO’s training program for emerging professional musicians, offers a series of free concerts at Symphony Center as well as its annual concert at the South Shore Cultural Center. Complete program details will be announced at a later date. While tickets are free, there is a nonrefundable $2 service fee per ticket and maximum of six tickets allowed per concert, per household. Single tickets for all CSOA-presented programs during the 2014/15 season—Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) concerts; Symphony Center Presents (SCP) concerts featuring classical, jazz, contemporary and world music; CSO at the Movies and related film programming; and other special concerts—go on sale tomorrow, Friday, August 8 at 10 a.m.  Tickets and 2014/15 subscriptions are available by calling the Symphony Center box office at 312-294-3000, online at cso.org, or by visiting the Symphony Center box office at 220 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60604. The box office and phone lines are open Friday, August 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

All performances take place at Symphony Center unless otherwise noted.
