Brooklyn Museum Public Programs for Adults, Teens, and Kids in February 2015

The Brooklyn Museum will present a variety of programs for adults, teens, and kids in February. Public programs include talks, nighttime events, performances, screenings, and hands-on workshops for children and adults that amplify the Museum’s exhibitions and permanent collection, serve its diverse public, and support learning through the visual arts.

 

Highlights include a conversation with Spike Lee, Kehinde Wiley,and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh on the role storytelling plays in the visual arts, including sneak preview clips from Lee’s upcoming film, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus; performances by the St. Luke’s Orchestra and by the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra; a special Killer Heels Teen Night featuring art-making, live music, and dance performances; and Valentine’s Day activities that explore the galleries through the lens of love.

Thursday, February 5, 7 p.m.

Panel Discussion: “Insider Art:  Recent Curatorial Approaches to Self-Taught Art”

Matthew Higgs, co-curator of Judith Scott-Bound and Unbound, moderates a discussion about the recent growth in curatorial approaches to self-taught artists that focus on relationships between creativity and disability. Panelists include Lynne Cooke, Senior Curator, Special Projects in Modern Art, National Gallery of Art; Massimiliano Gioni, Artistic Director, New Museum; and Lawrence Rinder, Director, University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.

Arty Facts: “Collection Connection: Visible Storage”

Materials fee (Museum admission not included): $10 per family (up to four participants); $5 for Gallery/Studio families and Members at the Family level; free to Members at the Friend level and above.

 

Children ages four to seven and their parents or caregivers explore the galleries, enjoy a team activity, and make their own art in each ninety-minute Arty Facts class. In February, students peek inside Luce Visible Storage to find connections with other pieces on view throughout the Museum. Participants meet in the Rubin Lobby at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Parents and caregivers are asked not to bring siblings older than seven or younger than four.

Music: Orchestra of St. Luke’s: “Short Stories”

Tickets are $10 to $38 and include Museum general admission

St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble offers a collection of short musical gems from Britten, Frank, Ginastera, and Mozart. Tickets can be purchased at www.oslmusic.org.

In Conversation:  Brooklyn Renaissance with Spike Lee, Kehinde Wiley, and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh

Tickets are available for $16 at www.museumtix.com and include Museum general admission. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. A limited number of tickets will be available at the Visitor Center on the day of the program. Free for Museum Members.

 

Join acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee, artist Kehinde Wiley, and illustrator Tatyana Fazlalizadeh for a special one-night-only conversation about the role storytelling plays in the visual arts. Q&A with the artists follows the conversation. A sneak preview of clips from Spike Lee’s upcoming film, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus,filmed in part at the Brooklyn Museum and featuring artworks by Wiley and Fazlalizadeh, will also be shown. Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic opens at the Brooklyn Museum on February 20, 2015.

Make a day-date with friends or a loved one and come explore the galleries through the lens of love. Join a Pop-Up Sensory Tour, write a sonnet to your favorite painting, enjoy musical serenades, and make a Valentine for yourself or another.

Stately longsword dances and faster rapper dances are performed with double-handled swords-with a few surprises. The performances are accompanied by live folk music.
