Today, Broods gave fans a taste of their forthcoming sophomore album – due out this summer – by releasing the anthemic first single, “Free,” and premiering the accompanying video. The track is available for purchase on iTunes and streaming on Spotify and SoundCloud. The video can be viewed on VEVO.

The New Zealand duo – composed of Georgia and brother Caleb Nott – will once again join Ellie Goulding on the road. Broods will be opening on the West Coast leg of her North American tour, which kicks off tonight in Vancouver, BC at Pepsi Live at Rogers Arena and includes a show at Staples Center Arena on Friday, April 8. They will be performing some of their new material – including “Free” -while on tour with Goulding. See below for itinerary.
With “Free” – co-written and co-produced with Joel Little (Lorde, Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding), who helmed the band’s debut album – Broods build on the restrained, textural pop of 2014’s Evergreen (Capitol Records) and amp up the intensity. “Hallelujah, I’m free,” sings Georgia, her voice surrounded by whip-cracked beats and an arsenal of pulsing, oceanic synths. While Georgia has grown into a powerful vocalist, Caleb has similarly evolved as a producer.

“When we were starting, I had to explain to someone else what it was I wanted to hear,” he says. “Now I can just make those sounds myself.” According to the duo, “Free” not only signals their continued evolution as a pop act, but also serves as a testament to how much they’ve grown as people. The track is both menacing and liberating-the sound of a band smartly coming into its own.

“I didn’t want to just be up there singing about love,” says Georgia, “I wanted to talk about other things-things that people might really be going through, the kinds of things you face when it’s not just about being a kid anymore and having fun. I wanted to make great pop songs that also feel just a little more mature.”

Evergreen – which contained the singles “Bridges” and “Mother & Father” – debuted at No. 1 on the New Zealand album chart and charted in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Alternative Albums chart. Vulture praised Evergreen as “easily something you can play over and over again” and AllMusic.com noted, “The massive hooks and neatly stacked vocals on standouts like “Mother & Father” and the kinetic “L.A.F.” showcase the duo’s command of enchanting and melodic indie electropop.” The band has won a total of five New Zealand Music Awards, including Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2014 and Album of the Year and Best Group in 2015.
