The Boston Symphony Orchestra Board of Trustees recently elected a new Board Chair, a new Board President, three new Trustees, and 12 new Overseers to terms beginning September 1, 2014. William “Bill” F. Achtmeyer, chairman and managing partner of The Parthenon Group LLC, was elected Chair of the BSO Board of Trustees—the top leadership position on the board—effective September 1, 2014, succeeding outgoing Chair Edmund Kelly. Dr. Paul Buttenwieser, a psychiatrist specializing in psychoanalysis, child and adolescent psychiatry, was elected President of the Board. These new board appointments coincide with Andris Nelsons’ first season as BSO Music Director, with a major gala party celebration planned for Tuesday, September 23, and his first concert as music director to take place on Saturday, September 27—a program of music by Puccini, Wagner, and Respighi, with special guest artists, soprano Kristīne Opolais and tenor Jonas Kaufmann.

The addition of the position of President reflects the size and scope of the organization today, and adds to the depth of leadership – alongside the Chair and other officers – as the Orchestra enters an important period that will see the introduction of Andris Nelsons as the BSO’s new music director and the development of several strategic projects that will strengthen the BSO’s position as a leading orchestra in the world.

In addition, the Board elected three new Trustees: Susan Hockfield, Ph.D., Barbara Hostetter and Joshua A. Lutzker. The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Trustees has the legal responsibility for setting the broad policies of the BSO, approving budgets, reviewing audits, handling and maintaining assets, and appointing the music director and managing director positions. The Trustees also establish fundraising mechanisms and assume leadership in capital, endowment, and annual fund drives.

The Trustees also elected twelve new members of the BSO Board of Overseers: James Aisner, Liliana Bachrach, Yumin Choi, Sarah Eustis, Beth Fentin, Zoher Ghogawala, Patricia Gilbert, Karen Kaplan, Randy Pierce, Ronald Rettner, Sandra Urie, and Marillyn Zacharis. BSO Overseers lend their expertise and judgment to the Trustees and management on a wide range of topics, including development, marketing, finance, real estate, government relations, and ancillary activities.
