(Sarasota, FL) Just in time for Valentine’s Day! Learn how to paint flowers in “Beautiful Blooms: Winter Roses for February,” a painting workshop with Lucy Barber, February 13 and 14, 9 a.m.-noon, at the Lucy Barber Studio, 1330 Central Avenue, Sarasota; 941-487-7811; www.lucybarber.com. Each workshop is six hours and students will take home at least one painting per workshop. The fee for each workshop is $100. To register for the workshops, call 941-487-7811 or visit www.lucybarber.com.

“I start from where the student is in his or her exploration of painting—and help them discover their own unique expression,” says Barber, who has taught at Ringling College, Pratt Institute, Bowdoin College, The College of William & Mary and other schools. She adds that beginners are welcome though it’s helpful for the student to have a basic understanding of paint use, mixing colors, and some drawing experience. “My goal is to help students to gain a deeper understanding of how to use paint and color mixtures, as a way to develop luminosity and form in painting.”

Barber, who has received numerous awards for her art, including two Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants, says that color is her specialty. “Light, color and essence move me. The movement of light, the energy of color, and the underbelly of place or subject inspire me. The sensation of seeing and experiencing the moment whether embraced by location or touched by object renders an essential perspective that must travel to the canvas. It’s like going from black and white to color in a palette of transformation — all history comes to life here.”

Lucy Barber has been painting landscapes, still-lifes and figures for 25 years and has been exhibiting nationally and abroad since 1989. She received her MFA in painting and drawing from Brooklyn College, City University of New York, and her BFA in photography from The Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She has participated in numerous exhibitions in the United States and abroad, and her work has been reviewed in notable press such as The New York Times, The New York Sun, Philadelphia Inquirer, Art New England, among others. For her studio painting and drawing Barber has received numerous awards, including two Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants. In 2008 Barber was invited to teach as full-time Visiting Artist Instructor at Ringling College of Art and Design in the degree program, and has taught there since 2011 as part-time instructor. In addition, Barber has taught at Pratt Institute in the Foundation Program, Bowdoin College, The College of William & Mary among other esteemed colleges. Lucy Barber teaches and paints in Sarasota, conducting workshops, teaching privately and in classes.
