Basketball and Boxing Highlight Sunshine State Games Calendar This Weekend

~ Registration is still available for Boxers in Fort Lauderdale ~

TALLAHASSEE – For the third consecutive weekend, Florida amateur athletes will compete in 2016 Sunshine State Games events with Basketball being played on courts in Alachua County and Boxing in the ring in Fort Lauderdale.

A total of 38 teams will take the courts in various locations in Alachua County, on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28, in ages ranging from elementary school to high school.

The three-day boxing tournament begins Friday at Carter Park Recreation Center in Fort Lauderdale and continues through Sunday.  Two sessions will be held on Friday and Saturday beginning at 12 Noon and 6:00 p.m.  Sunday has only one session, beginning at 1:00 p.m.  For boxers waiting until the last minute to register, there’s still a chance to climb in the ring as on-site registration will be accepted on Thursday evening from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Carter Park Gymnasium in Fort Lauderdale.

This three day tournament will be conducted much like Olympic boxing with an eight person bracket with winners advancing toward a gold medal.  In 2015, nearly 150 boxers competed in the Sunshine State Games.  Tournament Director Angel Nazario is confident that number will be reached again in 2016.  Visit www.heartandsoulboxing.com for more information about Sunshine State Games boxing registration.

Fans of amateur boxing admission for the 2016 Sunshine State Games Boxing Championships is a suggested $10 donation.
