LOS ANGELES – October 9, 2015 – AXS TV puts the spotlight on a new and innovative brand of filmmaking, with an exclusive special covering the best entries from the 2015 NEW YORK CITY DRONE FILM FESTIVAL. The 90-minute event premieres on Wednesday, October 21, at 11pE. Hosted by founder and festival director Randy Scott Slavin, the special highlights over 20 of the world’s best drone films created by a blend of established veterans and up-and-coming talent.

The event is divided into six separate categories, kicking off with the Narrative Category, which features the Man of Steel-inspired Best In Show winner “Superman with a Go Pro,” by YouTube stars Corridor Digital; the urban thriller “Our Drone Future”; and the breathtaking mountain excursion “Himalayan Aerials.” Next up is the X Factor Category, for films that defy genre such as the cutting-edge surfing short “Pipeline Winter”; Vanuatu volcano “Yasur Volcano”; the high-flying “Mexico City International Airport From Above”; and category winner “I Won’t Let You Down,” from OK GO, the beloved indie rockers behind the viral video sensation “Here It Goes Again.”

Then, drone pilots put their skills on display in the First Person View category, featuring the Indonesian spectacle “Balinese;” the ethereal “Opening Sequence;” freestyle maverick Charpu’s incredible “Soothing Madness;” and category winner “Santa Monica Airlines.” The Dronie category—named after the drone version of a selfie—follows, featuring the tranquil “Columbia River Gorge;” the Bahamas-based category winner “Floating;” and the mountaintop shot “Mt. Bromo.” The evening wraps up with the Travel Category, featuring the island paradise “Galapagos Above And Below;” the safari short “African Flight;” category-winning Thailand tour “Koh Yao Noi;” and the time-lapse epic “Cathedral Cove, New Zealand;” followed by the Architecture Category, which pays tribute to a variety of trademark landmarks in “Tiny Boston,” “Mont St. Michel, France,” and the stunning Montreal Art scene celebration “Graffiti City.”

Founded in 2015, the NEW YORK CITY DRONE FILM FESTIVAL is the first and only event of its kind solely devoted to drone cinema. To be eligible for entry, each short film had to include footage that was at least 50 percent shot on a drone and no more than five minutes long. Originally held on March 7, 2015, the festival was a resounding success, featuring handpicked selections from over 155 entries, as fans and filmmakers from across the world gathered together to witness the best films that this blooming art form has to offer.

AXS TV’s NEW YORK CITY DRONE FILM FESTIVAL is an innovative one-of-a-kind special, showcasing the newest trend in the film making today, drone cinema,” said Michele M. Dix, AXS TV’s senior vice president, programming and development. “Packed with gravity-defying angles and breathtaking footage of places never before seen by the human eye, viewers will marvel at what has been captured by these talented producers using drones. From music videos to travel films to comedic shorts, NEW YORK CITY DRONE FILM FESTIVAL touches upon all genres in a fresh and fast-paced entertaining 90-minute format.”

“AXS TV’s NEW YORK CITY DRONE FILM FESTIVAL special captures all the drama and excitement of our breakout year,” said Festival Founder and Director Randy Scott Slavin. “The festival was a major success, bringing the international drone cinema community together for the first time ever, and captivating the attention of the film, tech and media industries. We are thrilled that AXS TV is putting the spotlight on the stunning opportunities that drones bring to the world of filmmaking.”
