Sarasota Youth Opera’s
Brundibár
Tomorrow!

Hans Krása’s Brundibár
Sarasota Youth Opera Production
Nov. 14, 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Children $12, Adults $25
Family Package $55 (4 children, 2 adults)

Sarasota Youth Opera’s Brundibár features a new prologue created by music staff. For this Fall’s Youth Opera production, stage director Martha Collins and Youth Opera music director Jesse Martins wanted to put the opera into historical context.

Performed more than 55 times by the children of the Theresienstadt concentration camp during WWII, Hans Krása’s Brundibár finds Annette and Little Joe in search of milk for their ill mother. The children’s only hope is to raise money by singing in the marketplace, but the heartless organ grinder Brundibár chases them away.

Martha Collins created a new prologue told entirely in the words of children, set to music especially selected by Maestro Martins. The prologue is a tapestry that begins with the Declaration of Independence, moves to Germany, touches upon other countries, and ends with modern day issues of bullying.
