corner
The Hermitage Artist Retreat, along with its partner the Aspen Music Festival and School, is proud to announce that Thomas Kotcheff was just presented with the 2014 Hermitage Prize. The award is given annually to a composition student participating in the summer program at the Susan and Ford Schumann Center for Composition Studies with the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen.

The Prize consists of a six-week Hermitage residency and a $1,000 stipend to cover travel and food expenses. Kotcheff was selected from among his peers by Robert Spano, music director, Alan Fletcher, president and CEO and composers-in-residence Sydney Hodkinson, Steven Stucky and George Tsontakis.

“We are so proud to have the Hermitage Prize as part of the Aspen Music Festival and School,” remarked Bruce Rodgers, Hermitage Executive Director. “These ‘students’ are already on their way to impressive careers with a multitude of recognized work under their belts. They will be the Robert Spanos, Sydney Hodkinsons, Steven Stuckys and George Tsontakis’ of tomorrow. It’s very exciting and rewarding to have them with us at this juncture.”

Theatre Odyssey has announced that it will present its Third Annual Student Ten-Minute Playwriting Festival on January 16, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at the David S. and Ann V. Howard Studio Theatre, State College of Florida, Bradenton campus.

The student festival is managed similarly to Theatre Odyssey’s Annual Ten-Minute Play Festival. Theatre Odyssey identifies three qualified readers to select the plays, and then produces the selected plays for an audience including three capable and known theater professionals as judges of the works. Students must be Gulf Coast-area Florida residents and in grades nine through 12, or home-schooled equivalent, during the 2014-15 school year to be eligible. The winning play, and often a runner-up, is selected. The festival-winning playwright receives a cash prize, and the play is presented again at the Ten-Minute Play Festival. Theatre Odyssey publishes the play in its anthology of produced plays.

Flying a Sign opens in Two Columns Gallery

corner

jazz club

Flying a Sign, an exhibition of photographs by Sally Pettibon, will appear at the Two Columns Gallery in downtown Sarasota through August 29, with the opening on August 22 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Pettibon collected and photographed signs from people soliciting money from the roadside in Florida and around the U.S.  Pettibon has collected the signs for three years and her interest in the project stemmed from noticing a man with a sign made in a unique style.

Presented as a form of vernacular art, the signs calculated to garner a response from the viewer.  Seen in the gallery context, the signs mimic other roadside marketing strategies employed by more commercial businesses.

The show of photographs presents the signs as objects in a new context, not to judge the people holding the signs but to examine their message and methods.

Pettibon is an internationally exhibited photographic artist who has been a full time faculty member at Ringling College of Art and Design since 2003.
