For six years, Art Center Sarasota’s “iconcept” team has challenged area artists to create ensembles from unexpected and non-traditional materials. The results have been nothing less than extraordinary.

Lisa Berger, the founder of “iconcept” and Art Center Sarasota’s executive director says, “These artists never fail to amaze us; their ingenuity, originality and wit have made this one of the season’s most colorful and anticipated events.”

Some of this year’s highlights are Cathy Comora’s “BRAdal Gown,” constructed with actual bras; Andrea Silvergleit’s “Regular Fashion for Regular People,” made from Activia containers; Sharon White’s “No More Wire Hangers”; and Jim Stewart’s “Calendar Girl,” made from recycled Art Center calendars. Also featured will be special outfits commissioned by the Observer Media Group, including Eric Cross’s dress created from Observer newspapers and Ray Peper’s men’s suit, complete with shirt, shoes and bowtie made from Business Observer newspapers.

Prizes will be awarded once again for the “most unique” guest ensembles. This year’s event also boasts a boutique of handcrafted items for sale and a creative dance presentation by Fuzión Dance Artists, who will be wearing costumes designed and made by “iconcept” artists. Lorenzo Hubbard, the award-winning Miami interior designer and public personality, is back to emcee.

According to Berger, “iconcept” has become a vital fundraiser and awareness builder for Art Center Sarasota. “The funds we raised from last year’s event enabled us to hire a dedicated youth programs coordinator and expand our educational programs. That’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

Sponsorship opportunities for the 2014 “iconcept” are still available. For more information on becoming a sponsor, call 941-365-2032 or email Lisa Berger at [email protected].

About Art Center Sarasota

Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. It was founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, the art supervisor for the Sarasota County schools district. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949. Art Center Sarasota is now a membership-based organization that offers curated and juried exhibitions, adult and youth education programs, outreach initiatives for underserved youth, and culturally related public programming. Art Center Sarasota’s mission is to inspire individual creative expression, nurture artistic talent and provide the community with accessible and diverse visual art opportunities.
