Classic Hitchcock Film Gets Theatrical Stage Treatment

American Stage presents Comedy Thriller, THE 39 STEPS

St. Petersburg, FL – American Stage Theatre Company continues its 2015-16 “Season of Awakenings” with the award-winning stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s THE 39 STEPS, based on John Buchan’s novel and adapted by Patrick Barlow. The production will be directed by Producing Artistic Director Stephanie Gularte and will feature a cast of four actors playing more than 100 different roles.

The situation of trying to tell the story of this spy thriller with a cast of four, and in one single space, is just ripe for humor,” says Producing Artistic Director Stephanie Gularte. “There’s so much imagination that goes into bringing these scenes to life onstage. It will really be an ensemble creation that’s going to be a whole lot of fun for the audience.”

THE 39 STEPS runs from November 18 through December 13, 2015. Opening night is Friday, November 20, 2015.

Performances for THE 39 STEPS will begin with two preview performances on Wednesday, November 18 at 8pm and Thursday, November 19 at 8pm. The production will open on Friday, November 20 at 8pm. THE PLAY

Closely following the storyline of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film, this wonderfully inventive and gripping comedy thriller features four fearless actors putting their many sidesplitting skills to the test, playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. A wildly entertaining experience, this blissfully funny show follows the incredible adventures of our handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents, and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women.

Theatre at its finest!… Absurdly enjoyable! This gleefully theatrical riff on Hitchcock’s film is fast and frothy, performed by a cast of four that seems like a cast of thousands.”The New York Times

FUN FACTS

  • THE 39 STEPS is based on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film, which in turn was based on the 1915 novel by John Buchan.
  • In THE 39 STEPS, British hero Richard Hannay has to clear his name after a woman is murdered. Hannay would feature in four other books by Buchan and is recognized as a prototype for James Bond.
  • The stage version of THE 39 STEPS recreates the film scene-by-scene, and the four actors (three men and one woman) take on all 139 roles!
  • To pay homage to the original film, our upcoming production will be presented in full grayscale design.
