Amarillo Symphony’s 89th Season Concludes This Month
Lady Sings the Blues features guest conductor, soprano, pianist
AMARILLO, TEXAS – (April 10, 2014) – The Amarillo Symphony, (www.amarillosymphony.org), the leader of orchestral music in the Texas Panhandle since 1924, today announces details regarding its season finale, Lady Sings the Blues, on April 25 and 26 at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts in Amarillo.
Featuring legendary music by George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, and Duke Ellington, Lady Sings the Blues will offer a substantial, yet lighter classical music program. Lady Sings the Blues will feature favorites like Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Lullaby for Strings, plus the overture from Bernstein’s Wonderful Town and Ellington’s beloved Ellington Medley among others.
Guest conductor, Joseph Young, will lead the orchestra for this season finale performance. Mr. Young is increasingly regarded as one of America’s rising young conductors and was recently appointed as the new assistant conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the music director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra.
“We’re excited to conclude our 89th season with a fun, jazzy concert like Lady Sings the Blues,” said Susan White, executive director of the Amarillo Symphony. “The Amarillo Symphony is grateful for the generous support of our patrons this season and we look forward to returning next season in celebration of our 90th anniversary.”
Lady Sings the Blues will also feature guest soprano Anna Bergman and guest pianist Kevin Cole. Ms. Bergman has performed internationally in virtually every arena and highlights include performing as a soloist at the White House and for HM Queen Elizabeth’s birthday, while Mr. Cole is regarded as the best Gershwin pianist in America today. Mr. Cole is an award-winning musical director, composer, arranger, vocalist and archivist who delights audiences with a repertoire that includes the best of 20th century American music.
The Amarillo Symphony would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Pool for their generous support of Lady Sings the Blues.
The Lady Sings the Blues concert series will be held at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 at 8:00 pm. For more information about Visionaries or to purchase tickets, please visit www.amarillosymphony.org or call 806-376-8782.
